Looks like his time is up... I say, sell the drunk and get back young Acquafresca. He deserves his chance at Inter. In the summer, we could go after Drogba, to give JoMo what he really wants.

    From The Times of London

    January 5, 2009

End of Inter Milan love story nigh for Adriano

    Gabriele Marcotti
Think of this as a love story. A real one, with the inevitable peaks and troughs, misunderstandings and suspicions and rocky ending. It begins in the spring of 2001, when Inter Milan’s scouts become smitten with a man-child at Flamengo in Brazil. At the very beginning, it’s about the numbers: 6ft 3in, 14st of angry muscle, with a sprinter’s pace. But it’s the relationship between the striker’s left foot and the ball that leaves them open-mouthed. He can smack the leather off it or he can race with it up the pitch as if there were Velcro on his big left boot. The man-child is Adriano Leite Ribeiro and he joins Inter that summer, making his debut in a friendly at the Bernabéu in which he scores a goal people talk about for years to come. Real Madrid fans applaud him off the pitch. Inter believe they have found the new Ronaldo: with his shaved head and frightening physical skills, he looks the bigger, stronger copy of the original. “He can turn you inside out, he can run away from you, he can go around you and he can run right through you,” says Fabio Cannavaro, a man who knows a thing or two about defending.

Adriano spends a year at the San Siro, playing little, but “maturing”, as per the club’s plans. They then loan him out to Fiorentina, in Serie A, always monitoring his progress. He has his flaws — he remains almost entirely one-footed, he doesn’t take too well to complicated tactics, he occasionally gets depressed — but the raw talent is still there. Then, in the summer of 2002, the love begins to wane. Partly, it’s the coach, Héctor Cúper, who needs to win here and now and doesn’t want to invest time and energy into the club’s relationship with Adriano. Partly, it is a cluttered front line that includes Hernán Crespo, Christian Vieri, Álvaro Recoba and Obafemi Martins. Partly, it is Adriano himself, who wants more from the relationship: he’s tired of going on loan, he believes that the club don’t fully have faith in him. So Inter enter into a co-ownership agreement with Parma in exchange for £4 million. Under the terms, he moves to the Serie A rivals, who pay his wages. Should there be a dispute over where he plays, it would be settled by sealed bids. It’s a bit like a trial separation, but one in which, if you’re willing to pay enough money, you can get your spouse back (cynics might say it’s a bit like real life). Adriano flourishes at Parma, scoring 23 goals in 34 Serie A starts over the next 18 months. He becomes the hottest commodity in European football. Inter realise that they have made a terrible mistake and come crawling back. But he doesn’t come cheap. Because of the co- ownership agreement, they have to shell out £13.5 million to buy Parma’s half. But surely it’s worth it. He’s not even 22 yet. And, for a while, everything works out magically. Upon his return, he scores 40 goals in his first 60 appearances. He’s rewarded with a £120,000-a-week contract, as befits the best centre forward in the world.

But the wedded bliss doesn’t last. This time, demons off the pitch begin to haunt him. His father passes away, the mother of his child leaves him, he begins to drink far more than he should. One thing leads to another, his fitness deteriorates, he starts to miss training sessions. Inter bend over backwards for him. They send him on long holidays in Brazil, they get him a personal trainer, they eventually loan him to São Paulo, in the spring of last season, thinking that some time at home will do the trick. Nothing seems to work. When he returns to Inter in August, there’s a new sheriff in town, José Mourinho. The “Special One” has a reputation as a disciplinarian, but he knows that Adriano is too big a talent to let slide, so he dons his marriage-counsellor hat. But even Mourinho cannot connect with him. His tally for the first six months of the season is disappointing — three goals in 11 appearances — and when he returns to Brazil for the winter break, there is talk that he might not come back. “Adriano should maybe spend some time elsewhere,” Mourinho said last month. “He needs a tutor, I can’t be his tutor.” Inter field offers for him, but ask him to return for training last Friday. When the scheduled flight from Brazil arrives, he’s not on it. The club initially claim that he simply took another, earlier flight and that he’s “undergoing a medical”. But that white lie is soon rumbled, when Adriano is spotted at the airport hours later, dozy
    after a transatlantic journey.

And so the club have no choice but to fine him £150,000, the maximum allowed, while adopting a “this hurts me more than it hurts you” attitude, like you might when spanking a small boy. Because that’s what this love story has become. It was once a marriage of equals, it’s now a parent-child thing. And this particular child seems to have so many demons that it would take a raft of shrinks to sort him out. Adriano turns 27 next month. Unless Mourinho decides he wants to embark on one of the greatest reclamation projects in footballing history (and manages to pull it off), the love affair will be over, the only evidence that it ever existed being his enormous contract, which runs through June 2010. When that expires, there will be nothing left.

    Poor Adriano

Can't say he didn't deserve it!!

Oriali has today backed Adriano to stay at Inter.... hmmm.... looks like we might give him another shot at it. Personally, unless we get a top striker as replacement, I want to see Adriano against ManU! So I wouldn't be too disappointed if we keep him around for 6 months, and then take a call...

I can totally understand the confusion at Inter about what to do with Adriano... I myself keep changing my position on him every hour!!!!!!

I think unless Inter find a suitable replacement (who is not cup tied), then Adriano is going to be staying at least until the summer.

    I actually hope its true.

I haven't heard it yet, tho. I know Spurs are sniffing around, and I know Inter need to sell a defender and striker or two this Jan.

I think Burdisso is talented, his mentality sucks though. Once he makes one mistake, it will really affect his confidence which leads to more mistakes. I guess Mou thinks he needs him because he is the only other defender with similar characteristics to Cordoba, plus he's quite versatile.

Looks like these players will be offloaded... I wouldn't be too surprised if we let Rivas go instead of Burdisso, as Mou seems to prefer Burdisso.

We may have to buy a CB if we let 2 leave... normally we should be ok, but we do suffer too many injuries in this area.

Materazzi, Dacourt, Crespo And Burdisso Leaving Inter - Report
The winds of change are about to blow through the Inter Milan squad, taking with them several unwanted players. The last few weeks of the January transfer window could prove significant for Inter as a number of players could be shipped out as coach Jose Mourinho proceeds to cut down his squad.

There were rumours in the Italian press on Wednesday suggesting Mourinho is desperate to trim the size of his squad. President Massimo Moratti backed his coach by declaring it would be the right thing to do. Il Corriere Dello Sport claims the Nerazzurri are now ready to offload players considered to be deadwood; a number of second-string players are facing the chop from the unforgiving coach. Things are looking decidedly bleak for Hernan Crespo, Marco Materazzi, Olivier Dacourt and Nicolas Burdisso. Julio Cruz, on the other hand, is expected to be safe as his agent is in Milan to negotiate a new deal for his client.

Villarreal and Tottenham Hotspur are keen on Argentinean defender Burdisso and, although his agent claims he will stay, it seems likely that he will leave. Materazzi seems set for a return to the Premier League 10 years after leaving Everton for Inter. Manchester City and Spurs seem keen on the Italian stopper while his agent Claudio Vigorelli has admitted that the defender could leave the club during the transfer window. Crespo is also set to be shipped out. The hitman has been wasting away down on the Inter bench and he is desperate for some regular football. As for Dacourt, he is likely to remain in Italy. Bologna and Serie B side Parma are reportedly interested in the midfielder. Dacourt has been left to rot by Mourinho and he could be the first to leave. What's for certain is that the coach wants to cut down his squad to around 20-21 players maximum, and the changes are likely to come sooner rather than later.

The coach lost his temper on Sunday and some nasty words began to fly out of his mouth...

Inter coach Jose Mourinho has slammed his players, describing them as a pile of faeces as he begins to show his frustration with their poor showings.

La Repubblica claims they heard Mourinho blast his players inside the changing rooms following the 3-1 thrashing away to Atalanta on Sunday. The Italian paper has released a transcript of of what the former Chelsea coach told his players.

"You won a Scudetto in the court, the second because there was no competition and the third was won at the last minute. You are all a pile of s**t," Mourinho is quoted as saying by La Repubblica.

The paper also claims the 'Special One' was ranting and raving for quite some time afterwards as his temperature reached boiling point. Also, it is believed Massimo Moratti was furious with Mourinho on Monday.

Meanwhile, Sky Sport Italia also claim Mourinho threw his notebook in the bin in anger, such was his disappointment with the result.

It was Inter's second loss of the season after the 1-0 defeat to Milan earlier.

The Nerazzurri have been through a turbulent week, but they made up for it with the Coppa Italia win over Roma on Wednesday, albeit in suspicious circumstances as there was controversy over Zlatan Ibrahimovic's winner.

    lol!

Yeah, this piece of shit will now claim that he won the scudetto fair and square in order to distance himself from the titles won by Mancini. That's in case he wins it.
And forgetting the manner in which Mancini's Inter played and the one now. Boring, boring, clueless team without a single desire to play the way shey should. With some exceptions.

They played some good football, and maybe a little bit to attacking for Inter's taste. At least u were given a chance to enjoy football from time to time.
I haven't enjoyed a single game this season when Inter played. Again, maybe with some exception.
He just brought the same tactics that he used at Chelsea. Don't let them score, if we do, then defend it.
And when the things don't go your way, then throw on the pitch 3,4 strikers in order to escape the defeat or a shameful draw.
I'm just waiting to see his face along with Moratti's when they don't win the CL, and maybe not even scudetto.

    No.

He started with the 4-3-3 with Mancini and RQ on the wings. It didnt work and now has opted for a 4-4-2, with two upfront (i.e. Ibrah and Adriano last night.) I agree they have been pretty dull to watch, hopefully the CL tie will be exciting.

Tbf He was lumbered with Michael Ballack and was never going to drop either Lampard or Essien, and ended up with 3 CMF's. The arrival of Ballack ended Chelsea's days of being a team playing with width.

Mourinho tried out the 433, but when it became clear that his summer reinforcements are not playing up to the mark, and his tactics are failing terribly, Mou has revereted to Mancini's 442 with a similar style of play. Mou's team has not yet reached the levels at which Mancini's team used to play when in form (a good 18 months of top top form). Mou has not yet managed to play at that level, but its just been 6 months since he has taken over, I woudl give him more time.

Mancio's team was more attacking, there was a little bit more urgency in their attacks. That said, the physical play and defensive formation of Mancio's team have now been retained by Mou - its no different. Mancio's team in his last 3 years were defensively better than what Mou has shown so far.

I think Mou will only become more successful than Mancio at Inter once his wide/creative players start performing... so far Quaresma, Mancini and Figo have been pathetic. Without them, Mou cannot hope to take this team to a higher level than what Mancio did. At best, he can hope to reach the same level.

As for that dressing room report, its just some mischief by the creative media - I don't think even a fool would believe those words to be true. Inter are used to getting such crap media reports, Berlu has half of Italys media in his pocket to do his mischief for him.

Well let me ask you this blue. Do you think Mourinho was right to try and completely change the style of Inter's play, using wingers in a 4-3-3 and playing with a higher line, as he initially tried to do?

To me it was clear this formation was not suited to the team from the beginning (i remember discussing it with you) mainly because there is no natural position for Ibrahimovic in a 4-3-3. IMO the side was clearly suited to a 4-3-1-2 (as had been played under Mancio) and only a few minor adjustments were needed such as the addition of a playmaker to the midfield. I know it may be slightly early to judge, and Mourinho may have something up his sleeve for the CL, but it seems you are in pretty much the same position you were before Mourinho arrived, but for the addition of Muntari.

Muntari has just filled in for the injured Vieira, so we are basically back to square one.

I remember we had this discussion before - yeah, the 433 was never going to suit us coz we just don't have the right players for it. More than that, the players we have (our best performers like Ibra, Maicon, Cambiasso, Zanetti, Stankovic, etc) are so much more suited for 442, which brings out the best of their abilities.

So in a way I am glad that Mourinho realised this early enough to rescue our season and we were back on track in the final quarter of 2008... I think 2 things need to happen for Mou to successfully implement the 433:

    1. Mou will need to take a leap of faith, and try Ibra in that attacking midfield role. This will make the 433 much more attacking minded than what Mou is generally used to, but this is the only way it can work.
    2. The final attacking 3 need to come back into form - Adriano, Quaresma, & Mancini. Without them this is not going to work.

This could be our alternate formation, which could be tested against smaller teams at the Guiseppe Meazza. This formation is more of a 4231 than a traditional 433. The formation I am talking about is:
    Cesar
    Maicon - Samuel - Cordoba - Zanetti
    Cambiasso - Muntari
    Quaresma - Ibrahimovic - Mancini
    Adriano

I can see the above working if these set of players are in decent form. Yeah, its somewhere between the 433 and the 442. It will also need Samuel-Cordoba fit, and Zanetti instead of Maxwell at LB, as there will be less midfield cover for the defence. And we have decent reserves for this formation as well:
    Toldo
    Santon - Matrix - Burdisso/Rivas - Maxwell
    Stankovic - Vieira
    Figo - Jimenez/Obinna - Ballotelli
    Crespo/Cruz

Seems Fulham are in for Dacourt on loan. Apparently he has been frozen out by Mourinho. I remember him being decent at Leeds ages ago, how is he nowadays?

He was very decent under Mancini... then got injured last year, and this season Mou has not used him... IMO he still has a good season or two in him, and will be good for Fulham.

A quite sensible interview by Adriano.... this gives me hope that he is at least thinking in the right direction....

Now for Balotelli to reach this stage.....

Adriano: Jose saved me Sunday 1 February, 2009
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adriano has publicly credited Jose Mourinho with “saving my career” and admits he once turned up to training while drunk. The Brazilian was set to quit Serie A in the wake of personal problems and poor performances, including times when Mourinho had frozen him out of the squad.

“We never had an argument. We spoke a great deal and I admitted to my mistakes,” l’Imperatore told Brazilian newspaper Correio de Manha. “He understood and saved my career. We have an excellent rapport because he is a great Coach and treats everyone equally. He truly is ‘The Special One.’” Adriano denies he went off the rails again recently by turning up to training after partying hard all night – but concedes he has done it before.

“There has been too much talk about me and only half of what is written turns out to be true. I am 26 years old and like all young men I like to have fun. “It’s not true that I turned up to training drunk. I am not an alcoholic. In the past it happened, but that is behind me now.” If that was last year, then it explains why Roberto Mancini repeatedly froze Adriano out of the squad and prompted a bitter split with the tactician.

“Would I have remained at Inter with Mancini? I didn’t get to make that decision, as he left first. Mancini is a great Coach, but Mourinho is more complete.” A January transfer was on the cards, but offers from Tottenham and Newcastle United were reportedly rejected.

“I will stay at Inter, as this is the best situation for me. I play for a team I adore and want to help them by scoring many goals. “I love the 4-4-2 system the Coach is using now, as playing with Zlatan Ibrahimovic is easy. He is a phenomenon, the best player I’ve seen in my career.” Adriano cannot play against Torino this afternoon because he sits out the second in a three-match ban. The Brazilian was caught on camera punching Daniele Gastaldello in the stomach during the 1-0 win over Sampdoria.

Well despite how crap he's been. I still prefer not to face him because he is someone who can make something out of nothing.

yeh it's a strange decision by Mourinho. I would've thought Samuel would come in for Materazzi (who has barely been used by Mourinho). Now there are 6 central defenders in their squad! Also, another plus point for you is that Balotelli is only on the B-list, meaning Inter only have 3 strikers in their squad - Ibra, Adriano and Cruz.

    Some strange choices by Mourinho....

Bobo, I think Materazzi had to be in to meet the Association trained players requirement. So I can understand why Quaresma missed out. One mid had to go, and RQ was the most expendable. Crespo, Obinna & Quaresma are the noteable omissions.

But what really surpises me is the lack of strikers... I hope we can call on the "B list" players anytime we want?? Coz we may need balotelli, specially if a striker gets injured!

MILAN - F.C. Internazionale has submitted to UEFA its A list of 25 players and a B list of 8 youngsters for the knockout stages of the 2008/09 Champions League.

I can't remember but Muntari and Jimenez are association trained right? is Adriano aswell?

Still i think 6 CBs is excessive - he could've got rid of Rivas.
