The thing was, with all the joking about that Ballack is the perennial runner-up etc, you do have to remember that it does affect or hit him. And so I can really understand why he wouldn't want to do that right after the game--I think the main point wasn't that he thought the banners were "cheap and nasty" but that he wanted some time to settle his thoughts and deal with the whole thing rather than get told "now put on a brave smile and wave to the fans".
And the thank you gestures were not abandoned. Other players stepped up. Podolski and Odonkor did carry the banners in the end.
