Manchester City are closing in on the £5million transfer of Chelsea's Israel international centre-back Tal Ben Haim, according to reports.

City boss Mark Hughes has been tracking the 26-year-old ever since taking over at Eastlands early last month.

Ben Haim only moved to Chelsea from Bolton on a free transfer last summer, but ended up as fourth-choice in his position behind John Terry, Ricardo Carvalho and Alex.

He fell out with former Blues boss Avram Grant and did not feature at all in the first team from mid-February onwards.

Portsmouth are also interested in signing Ben Haim but the player is believed to favour a return to the north-west.

He will be a good signing for them, part of the reason we have done so poorly against Bolton in recent years is the fact they were very well organised defensively. Ben Haim played a big part in this.

Surprised Newcastle haven't made an offer for him.

Newcastle, spend a reasonable fee on a defender who is actually decent?

I'd be surprised if they made an offer. Makes too much sense for Newcastle.

Well, we've got £10 million for Sidwell and Ben Haim. For once, there seems to be a bit of shrewd business going on from our end.

shrewd certainly, compared to the £12m you spent on wages and signing on fees for the pair

If it was £12m, that would make them 2 of the highest paid players at the club (around £120,000 a week). I don't think that's likely somehow glenda do you? (unless you have some inside information you're not sharing with us).

The deal is almost done afte we agreed a £4m deal with Chelsea. TBH i think he will be a very good buy, he will add good cover for Richards and Dunne although seen as we are in Europe this season i expect him to get plenty of games.
