Czech Republic ready to put on a show

The positive, attacking football witnessed at UEFA EURO 2008™ is a hard act to follow, but the players and coaches at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship will attempt to do just that. The tournament, the first men's finals since last month's drama unfolded, begins for hosts Czech Republic on Monday with coach Jakub Dovalil promising to "put on a show".

    Confident Czechs

On the eve of the Czechs' opening Group B game against England in Jablonec, Dovalil told a news conference: "Young players are a bit up and down, a bit inconsistent, but we will try to deliver positive football and put on a show." Dovalil, who last summer saw his country take second place at the FIFA U-20 World Cup, believes a similar showing is possible. "We would like to reach the semi-finals. We are a much smaller country than England, for example, but we are confident. I trust in the team and think we'll get a good start." Dovalil's faith comes from "the advantage that our players play regular top-flight football and have about 30 league games under their belts."

    Vital experience

Dovalil also claims the rain in Bohemia, "typical English weather", could benefit the opposition. England coach Brian Eastick, however, sees plenty to favour the hosts. He said: "The Czechs have very good players and they are playing at home, which is an advantage." Yet it is the overall scale of the competition which most impresses Eastick and which, he insists, will improve his players. "You have eight very good teams and it is terrific for young players to come and experience this," he went on. "If you speak to [England senior coach] Fabio Capello and his predecessors, they would all say that tournament experience is something our players have lacked and this is something we need to improve on. To come to this tournament is a success in itself – we are here for the pressure, because if the boys are going to achieve at senior level, they need this experience."

    Progression

Group B also contains last year's runners-up Greece and the 2003 winners Italy, who meet in Mlada Boleslav later on Monday. Greece coach Alexis Alexiou echoes his English counterpart, saying: "It is a big honour to be here and we want to enjoy it and play good football." The fact Greece have only two players remaining from last summer's silver streak in Austria changes expectations somewhat: "We have a brand-new team and, step-by-step, we will try to help these players progress and maybe achieve what their predecessors did." The main contenders this time around, Alexiou added, are "the traditional teams" – which doubtless includes Group A challengers Spain and Germany – although "the sides that get through our group should be in good shape too".

    Key to development

Giancarlo Antognoni, deputising at the news conference for Italy coach Francesco Rocca, defines the minimum requirement for the Azzurri as: "A show of maturity and of development – both tactically and physically. It is important to show these two elements at this level of competition." The team manager continued: "You have to try and win, but that is not easy because everyone has the same goal." Victory, it seems, is merely the cherry on the cake at a tournament where the pleasure of competing should be leavened by positive play. "It is a fundamental experience to be at a tournament like this," Antognoni concluded. "To be tackling the best players in your generation, playing abroad, is completely different from anything the boys will have known in Italy."

    We're ready

England U19 defender James Tomkins believes the Young Lions are fully prepared for the European Championships, which get underway on Monday evening.

In what is the competition's opening game, Brian Eastick's team take on their hosts the Czech Republic in Jablonec and after almost a week of training since joining up last Tuesday, the West Ham United starlet is just looking forward to starting the games.

"We're all ready now. We've been training in Colchester for a few days and and we've been up for it for quite a while now," he told TheFA.com

"We had a good tournament in Belarus so our confidence is quite high at the moment."

With the match being screened live on television across Europe and expected to attract a sell out crowd, it should be some occasion but given several players in the squad have experienced playing in the U17 World Cup last year, not to mention first team games for their clubs, Tomkins feels the atmosphere could work in England's favour.

"We're aware that obviously we're playing the host nation so the crowd is going to be quite big but most of the boys have experience of big crowds so that will help us going into this game," he added.

"We're expecting decent opposition, we've had an analysis on them and we're preparing ourselves in ther right way.

"They will be technically good and big and strong athletes, but we're not worried about them at the moment, we're concentrating on ourselves and playing well."

As a mainstay of the Young Lions defence this season, which didn't concede a single goal in the Elite Qualifying round in May, Tomkins also knows if the team can maintain that solidity, it's a good platform to build upon.

"There have been a lot of good performances, and some not so good performances, but we look at them and build from it," he added.

"We kept three clean sheets in Belarus and that's good because if you keep clean sheets, you can always win games.

"So we're all confident, we've had a good year and we want to take it into the Euros now."

Dunno they were poor during qualification (in Greece) v Holland, but won courtesy of an injuury time goal totally against the run of play. Do not think they'll do well.

Makes sense the Germans are 1-0 up; with Hrubesch as manager even I would work my socks off.

On the conveyor belt. At young ages you can still win by being physically more mature stronger/fitter; at later ages the skilled players will catch up in that area, while getting more skilled is impossible.

Top 10 Under-19 ones to watch

Who will follow in the footsteps of Fernando Torres and star at the UEFA Under-19 Championships?

Now a Euro 2008 winner with Spain, the Liverpool striker came to world's attention when he was named the best player at the prestigious youth tournament in 2002.

Torres finished as the top scorer and within a year had been rewarded with a full national call-up.

England's record in the competition is hardly inspiring, having won it just twice in the last 30 years.

But there are high hopes for the Three Lions this year with a number of players already making their Premier League debuts.

Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Sol Campbell and Robbie Fowler were all part of the England squad that were victorious on home soil 15 years ago.

Thierry Henry, Francesco Totti, Luis Figo and Petr Cech have also played in the Under-19 finals.

    No10: James Tomkins (England)

The centre-back broke into the West Ham first team last season and made six appearances. One of those was against Double winners Manchester United at Old Trafford where he he the unenviable task of facing an in-form Cristiano Ronaldo.

    No9: Ignacio Camacho (Spain)

Burst on to the scene when he started Atletico Madrid's clash with Barcelona in March. Camacho impressed with his creativity and passing range in midfield. He played 10 times last season and even bagged a double against Recreativo.

    No8: Freddie Sears (England)

The striker was prolific scorer for West Ham's reserve side and ended the season with an incredible 25 goals in 24 games. Boss Alan Curbishley gave him his big break as a sub against Blackburn in March and he was rewarded with a headed winner.

    No7: Daniel Sturridge (England)

There were huge expectations for Manchester City ace Sturridge as a youngster and Chelsea once tried to lure him to Stamford Bridge. Stuart Pearce gave him his debut last year before a serious injury ruled him out. Now back to his brilliant best.

    No6: Lars Bender (Germany)

The talented teen has already made over 50 appearances for 1860 Munich and was a key player in their promotion to the Bundesliga last season. His brother Sven plays alongside him for club and country, while cousin Tommy is at Colchester.

    No5: Krisztian Nemeth (Hungary)

Hailed as Hungary's next big thing and already has a full cap. Made waves in Liverpool's reserves last season with some Kop fans even calling for him to be in the first team. Highly rated by boss Rafa Benitez and likened to the great Kenny Dalglish.

    No4: Fran Merida (Spain)

The midfielder has already been compared to Arsenal team-mate Cesc Fabregas. Has a terrific left foot and brilliant eye for a defence-splitting pass. Went to Real Sociedad on loan earlier this year but is set for the first team at the Emirates.

    No3: Sotiris Ninis (Greece)

Targeted by Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, the impressive midfielder was named player of the tournament last year. Still young enough to play again this time around and the Panathinikos ace is expected to be the Greeks' main threat.

    No2: Alberto Paloschi (Italy)

Already competing with Kaka, Alexandre Pato, Ronaldo and Filippo Inzaghi for a spot in AC Milan's attack. Made his debut in February and scored within 18 seconds of coming on as a second-half sub. A lethal finisher and good tip for top scorer.

    No1: Scott Sinclair (England)

Known as a loan star with successful spells at four Championship clubs. Shot to fame when he scored a wonder goal for Plymouth two years ago and gone on to score for Chelsea's first team. Incredibly quick and skillful, he is one of the hottest young talents in the world.

Post by Ballboy Thomas Müller Mon Jul 14, 2008 9:51 pm

uefa.com wrote:Spain suffered their first competitive defeat for more than three years as their bid for a third consecutive UEFA European Under-19 Championship title started with a loss against an impressive Germany side in Plzen.

    Unbeaten streak
Horst Hrubesch's side claimed a deserved three Group A points at the Struncovy Sady Stadion thanks to goals early in each half from Richard Sukuta-Pasu and Ömer Toprak. Jordi Alba pulled one back midway through the second period but Spain were unable to prevent a first U19 level setback in 23 matches, an unbeaten run stretching back to April 2005.

    Early opener
Germany took the lead with their first meaningful attack in the seventh minute. Gebhart shrugged off the attentions of Mikel Sanjosé and slipped a pass through for Sukuta-Pasu to finish with aplomb across goalkeeper David de Gea. A second goal nearly followed as a free-kick found Sven Bender ten metres out but he failed to make sufficient contact with his head and Spain were able to scramble clear.

    German solidity
Hrubesch has said his team's formation needed to be flexible before the tournament but its rigidity was its strength while, in contrast, Emilio Nsue cut a lonely figure up front as Spain found little space to exploit with Germany's counterattacking style the more productive. Ginés Meléndez's side worked positions for a number of crosses but the deliveries amounted to little until moments before the interval when Daniel Parejo – scorer of the only goal in last year's final – headed down for another 2007 survivor, Aarón Ñíguez, to volley over. Daniel Aquino's low cross then found Jordi Alba, only for the midfielder to scuff his effort at Ron-Robert Zieler from close range.

    Toprak header
Sukuta-Pasu spurned a chance shortly after the break as he pounced on hesitancy in the Spain defence only to poke the ball too far past Zieler with an empty net awaiting for greater composure. Germany did not have time to rue that profligacy, however, as Gebhart's outswinging corner was met by Toprak and his header flew into the corner with De Gea caught out of position. Spain's response was instant with Ñíguez firing over while De Gea thrust out a foot to thwart Marcel Risse. Alba did reduce the arrears as he burst down the left and drilled across Zieler but Germany weathered the late pressure to earn a welcome win and leave Spain in the unfamiliar position of playing catch-up in their second game, against Hungary on Thursday.
