Impressed that good old Stewart Robson had the balls to cite Terry as the weak link in Chelsea's defence in the Sunday Torygraph:

Although reading Henry Winter's Manc wankfest of a report today, it's hard to fathom what game he was watching:

    ok

One paper gave him a 5 and said he was completely protected by Ferdinand.

Seems a bit unfair. Fedinand is obviously going to be the dominant player in that partnership.

@Allez - slight problem to that first article - Carvalho didn't play against the Manc's on Sunday, and Terry and Alex were excellent.

Infact Terry made a few excellent lung bursting runs, to such an extent that the United fans I were watching with were seething that he was actually playing after the Man City episode.

Terry may be a grade A c**t, but I'm horribly bored with people saying he's not a good player when he's clearlt brilliant.

I'd have him at Spurs in a flash Ale

People are at either opinion of Terry, that being of the extreme be it rating him or not.

I wouldn't say he is clearly brilliant. He does make mistakes and he has cheated on numerous occasions. The one that won the league back to back now was awesome many a time for Chelsea.

But in my book Carvalho since then has stepped it up and is one of the best defenders in the world. He is all a decent passer and scores the odd crucial goal here and there. He is the complete defender.

Agreed – I don't go as far as the purists on here but still think Carvalho, Alex, Woodgate and King are all finer defenders. Just thought some on here would be tickled to see exactly what is said on here so often repeated by an English pundit Yikes

Carvalho is a fine defender, yet even he makes mistakes, as shown by his strange backpass to Rooney last season when United were at Stamford Bridge.

I won't lie to you- I'm of the opinion that Terry as a human being is a c**t.

However, Terry the footballer IS clearly excellent - he doesn't have much pace and against quick attackers he is vulnerable, but not a single other aspect of his game is found wanting: he can distribute excellently, has fine positional sense, for all the cliched' labels of "blood and thunder" he is good on the ball, and as proven against United can bring the ball out of defence. Aerially he is superb, and so on:

basically he is a top class defender, but for the purists who like their defenders to appear more sleek, quick and elegant than he will inevitably recieve criticism.

As much as I would like to say Woodgate is a finer defender, simple fact is that in simple defending terms - he isn't. A finer footballer perhaps, but not defender.

Of couse Terry needs to be paired with someone quicker to cover his lack of pace, but no different to how Adams was covered by Campbell for both Arsenal and England for example, and Adams was - and I hate to admit this - a fantastic defender. Its not actually rocket science to say Carvalho brings the best out of Terry, or covers for him - that is what central defenders do. Neither is it anywhere near the truth to suggest Carvalho carries Terry either. Could you imagine Mourinho sitting on the sidelines thinking "hmm, he's not a very good defender, but I like his hair so I'll keep him in the team and make him captain".

No, but I can imagine Mourinho sitting on the sidelines thinking, "hmm, he's not very good for this game and/or he's in a bad run of form and I'd like to drop him, but I know I can't because he's the Raul of Chelsea and I'll be in even more trouble with my job"

Not saying that's actually the case, but to think that Terry is genuinely always picked for Chelsea purely on ability, is being a bit naive, at least IMO.
