David Moyes European Record Empty David Moyes European Record

Post by Roger Hunt Fri Oct 03, 2008 9:09 am

I mentioned this in the UEFA Cup thread but got no response.

Can anyone think of a manager of an English club with a worse record in Europe? How many times have Everton been knocked out of a European competition at the first stage since Moyes took over?

He can always blame lack of investment which is true but yeah he is unable to adapt to Europe.

Indeed : he can only outspend his mainland Europe opponents 6 to 1, while the rest of the EPL managers can outspend them 15 to 1....

Poor, poor David Moyes : how can anyone expect any results under those conditions Erm

Not to try and claim EPL teams as paupers or anything, but it's misleading to compare spending like that directly, because it simply costs more for EPL teams to buy the same standard as players as elsewhere -whether they buy domestically or abroad (we all know prices go up as soon as an English club comes in). How much would a German equivalent of Andy Johnson cost a German club? Methinks not £10m. How much would Feliiani cost to a non-EPL club? Again, I think it would've been less than £15m

On topic, Moyes doesn't have a great record. I don't know if it's that he just doesn't prioritise Europe, or is just unable/unwilling to adapt his tactics, but they're never going to progress anywhere interesting if they're satisfied to just fight for UEFA spot in the league, but then go out early, year-on-year.

    Completely untrue.

You really think that if Milan could get a player for 10M, an EPL club can't get him for the same amount ?

I don't know who taught you economy, but you should ask for your money back....

EPL clubs will have to negotiate harder to get him for that same amount, that I'll give you, but they're still able to get him for the same price anyone else does.

he's stalling over his new bumper contract too which seems strange since he's hit a glass ceiling and I can't see many better jobs out there for him. Unless he fancies taking on Spppppurs or Newcastle.

I think they would struggle. Everton would, anyway. Man Utd would probably get the same deal as Milan. It's not an absolute rule, but I do think on average English teams pay more. The point is for Everton (or Spurs, Villa, Man City) is that they are known to be wealthy (all that tv money) but do not have the same draw as they don't have champions league or anything. So they could try and sign the player Milan are offering 10m for, but they would fail, as the player would always choose Milan - unless they outbid them and Milan backed out. Felliani would not have cost Milan £15m. For extreme example, think of how Man City signed Robinho ahead of Chelsea. For these level clubs, the choice is either buy inferior players who are not as in-demand (at more reasonable prices) or try and compete for players above their level and overpay.

Add to this the fact you surely must acknowledge that the transfer market between EPL teams has inflated prices beyond any other in football and it simply is more expensive for an EPL team to buy players (but they have more money, and can sell at inflated prices to other EPL, so it's kinda relative - but you were only comparing amount spent).

There's nothing like unability to adapt to Europe for Moyes.
Or his team is playing well (like last year when he made past a group stage, beating Zenit there and lost to Fiorentina after penalties) or his team isn't playing well (like in 05/06 season or like now) and results in Europe are just another confirmation of poor performance.
    That's all.
