All time greatest goalkeepers?

just wondering how high do you think Buffon will rank, for he is by far the greatest in recent history.... many in Italy rate him above Zoff, and that is probably as high as it gets... so what do you think??

I voted for Yashin because he seems to recognised as the best and the footage I've seen is impressive. Schmeichel is probably the best goalkeeper I've actually seen, and Buffon currently the best around.

Was Chilavert that good? I've always seen him as being overrated because of his set pieces, goals, and unorthodox manner.

sep maier is supposed to be better than zoff

i think you can include kahn in that list

In my time of watching football I've seen no one better than Schmeichel, including Buffon and Khan.

Yeah, there could be others worthy of that list... shilton, Arconada, Prued-Homme, Piot, Viktor, Kahn, Zamora, Combi, Albertosi, Pagluica, etc... its difficult to know where to stop sometimes, and I guess I jus used my judgement (which may not be accurate, I do agree).

Re Chilavert, I wouldn't put him anywhere near my top 20, but many people do... so just put him in for other peoples opinion.

What about those 2 keepers : Carbajal and Campos or similar ? I dont know much about these (i think one is Spanish one is Mexican). Thyere famous.

Actually most "experts" put Yashin, Maier, and Zoff in the top bracket as the greatest of the greats, and some try and include the mavericks like Banks and Dasaev into that bracket too. Thats general opinion.

I actually believe that Buffon will enter that category too, he has been AMAZING for 7-8 years now, and has been regarded as one of the best in the world (if not the best) thru this period - that is mindblowing. Another good 3-4 years, and I see no reason why he wouldn't make that bracket. Kahn, for instance, was at that level only for 2-3 years, like Toldo and Barthez.

Even an Inter fan like me would admit that Buffon >> Zenga, and that say a lot. The problem is that I only started watching football in the 80s, and of the players before that, I have only seen clips. So I can say that in the last 20 years, I haven't seen a goalie as consistantly good as Buffon. There are some who are better for a year or two, but not so consistantly.

Buffon is more of a Zoff than a Dasaev, if you know what I mean.

I wont consider him to be the best Goalkeeper of all time - but surely in the top 15 best European Goalkeepers..

But yeah, you are right... thats exactly whats stopping Buffon from entering this list... mark my words, in 10 years time, people will talk of Buffon and Zoff in the same breadth. Just like people have started doing the same with Maldini and Facchetti.

I did give him an honorable mention...

maybe one reason is that like Combi, I haven't even seen clips of Zamora, only read about him... most of my footballing knowledge (of watching clips) is post war, so in that its limited.
