Ribéry Reveals Transfer Dream Empty Ribéry Reveals Transfer Dream

Post by Batman Mon Dec 29, 2008 2:15 pm

Bayern may not be pleased, but their star playmaker has revealed that he has designs on playing for one of Europe's biggest clubs in the future, and has compared himself to Lionel Messi...

Frank Ribéry has revealed that his dream is to play for one of Europe's richest clubs - and he believes that he is a similar player to Lionel Messi in the way that both can influence a game.

The French international is enjoying his spell with Bayern Munich, but has told Kicker that he dreams of joining the likes of Barcelona, Real Madird, Manchester United or Chelsea.

When Ribéry chose to join Bayern in the summer of 2007, that move caused a stir, while injury at Euro 2008 prevented any of the continent's biggest spenders from making an approach.

"Bayern is obviously one of the biggest and best clubs in the world," he said. "Obviously there are other clubs who would be a dream: Real Madrid and Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United.

"I certainly love Real Madrid because of their great tradition, but I feel happy here at Bayern. We will have to wait and see what the future holds."
His revelation that he would like to play for Spain's or England's finest may not be a surprise - and nor will the comparison to Messi, even if Ribéry made it himself.

"I think about Messi above everyone else. I think we have a similar style, we create the rhythm and we play for the whole team," he explained.

Real Madrid are on the look-out for a right-sided winger in the winter transfer window, but Ribéry's comment was not an invitation to bid now, while Bayern would reject any move in the middle of the season.

Could have been a quality signing for Arsenal if Wenger handn't been so tight with the money.

I think he meant $$$$ rather than 'big' - else he would have mentioned Liverpool instead of Chelsea.

Interesting to see that Ribery doesn't consider Serie A as a worthwhile league to play in Whistle

Poorly constructed article. Certainly the thread title doesn't match the content of the article.

He probably will leave Bayern in a year or two, but whoever get's will have to pay a fairwhack. Then again, if Bayern are able to attract the top players, and start contesting the CL again he may well choose to stay.

Its difficult to tell given that he plays in the Bundesliga. If the roles were reversed then I doubt the difference would be as obvious.

You make it sound as if the Bundesliga is some third rate league.

Ribery has proven himself internationally for France, and in the CL/UEFA Cup for Bayern anyway. Think he's currently leading the assist chart in this years CL despite missing the first couple of games.

He's right up there with Messi, Ronaldo and Kaka imo

Well at Marseille Robery was a 5 goal a season striker. At Bayern he's suddenly become a ten goal a season striker.

Bundesliga defences are famously shaky - and the footballing mentality over there is very attacking as well, so I personally think that the league is perfectly set up to make attacking players look a lot better than they actually are.

Players like Berbatov or Santa Cruz (who never scored more than 5 goals per season in his long stay at Bayern) are examples to show the opposite.

Santa Cruz was barely a starter.

Berbatov scored over 20 goals per season in the Bundesliga whereas the most he's managed in an EPL season is 15.

And when he started he didn´t score.

There are other examples like Christopher Samba, who are starters for EPL clubs after failing epically in the Bundesliga.
So it´s not unlikely that even average Bundesliga players can make it in clubs outside the big four.
I´ve come to my own conclusion that clubs outside the big four are not better than their Bundesliga counterparts. HSV and Wolfsburg have convincingly beaten Villa and Portsmouth a few weeks ago while Schalke have lost against ManC. There´s not much difference between midtable clubs from EPL and Bundesliga.

    Just excuses.Ale
Portsmouth was not out and fought for their last chance against Wolfsburg. They played their best team and tried everything to win. It was evident that they had a very limited side, though. It was a much deserved win for Wolfsburg.
Villa missed some key players. But it wasn´t their second team.
All in all Villa and Portsmouth were outclassed in these two games.

As I said,I don´t see big differences between midtable teams of the Bundesliga, Serie A or EPL.

This was the Villa team from the HSV game:

Guzan, Luke Young, Cuellar, Knight, Shorey, Gardner (Bannan 61), Sidwell, Reo-Coker, Salifou, Harewood, Delfouneso.

    lol!

That's more than 'missing key players'. Just ONE of the above is a first team regular.

Pompey didn't start Diarra, Johnson, Diop or Crouch.

I think the UEFA Cup argument is misleading, and it's not the first time I've seen it argued on here that the English clubs weren't playing weakened teams when they clearly were - which is a bit strange.

I don't disagree with the general sentiment though. The Bundesliga lacks real quality (aside from Bayern) to compare to the top English sides, but there are seven or eight teams who are fairly decent sides and who would probably settle in the mid-table of the Premiership or push for the UEFA cup places.

Salifou? That former 2nd Bundesliga player from RW Oberhausen player has made it into the villa side. Thats just another proof. cheers

Johnson played the full match. Crouch came in after 66 minutes to show his class. Wolfsburg missed Grafite, their best striker, too.

Even if they had played their second teams, shouldn´t they beat midtable sides from a third class league like the Bundesliga with ease? Wink

Kros, I've never even heard of Salifou until I looked up the Villa team Yikes

Pompey may not have been out but I think they'd effectively given up as even if they'd beaten Wolfsburg they were relying on results elsewhere.

That´s what I want to say. There is no real top club in Germany. Not even Bayern in my opinion. England have four of them. That´s why it is the best league. I never denied that.
Clubs like Hamburg, Werder, Hoffenheim or Schalke would play a decent role in the EPL. Not more, not less.

I'm certain Leverkusen would be competing for a UEFA Spot in the EPL, and Hoffenheim and Hamburg too.

Tweeds doesn't seem to rate any league outside of the EPL tbh. I actually hold German football in quite high a regard, but I'm obviously in the minority. I don't think any of the clubs aside from Bayern would make much of an impact in the CL, but there's definitely a lot of UEFA Cup quality sides, and no worse than their English, Spanish, Italian etc counterparts.
