Jens says about the English that they rely TOO much on what the gaffer says

they NEED instructions and when they don't get them don't know what to do

since the coach's instructions quickly become obsolete when a game develops in unexpected ways

Jens believes English players are often LOST

which could explain why they find it so difficult to regroup in the World/European Cups when they need to figure out different tactics and strategies during the game

No Otto. Wrighty left Arsenal in 1998, Lehmann joined in 2003.

there are quite a few good anecdotes in Jens' biography about Henry, the primadonna, who needed to be taught a lesson or two

Jens unplugged also has a VERY chinteresting chapter about the Mannschaft under Ribbeck

when we got kicked out in the first round of the Euros (by Portugal B)

apparently, Ribbeck was so incompetent, and the management team (also consisting of Stielike and Hrubesch) so DISUNITED

that the whole campaign quickly became a farce

DURING one training session the three could not agree on what to do and started to discuss further proceedings

initially , the players just watched and waited

then they kept themselves busy by just playing 5 vs 5, doing shooting practise, whereas some just LEFT the pitch and waited in the bus in disgust



kind of confirms 100% what I also thought

that year we could have done not only FAR BETTER, but really, probably, REALLY WELL

maybe even winning the thing outright

Ribbeck fluffed it though

the good thing is, the STUPID idiots at the DFB and in the media concluded the reason for the fiasco was a lack of TALENTS

and therefore initiated all those DFB youth initiatives (training camps) leading to the endless conveyor belt of TALENTS

some good came out of it

MAD JENS on 2000:

Jens also explains why Babbel was so good when he took over from Veh but failed completely at the start of the next season when things started to go pear-shaped

there is also a wonderful anecdote about Babbel's disciplinary methods

when VfB were in freefall, he wanted to punish or shake up the team; so he got rid of single-bed-rooms in hotels and put two players in one room

Jens was furious, pointing out that all players had different rythyms/habits and would just end up DISTURBING each other making the team even less successful

Babbel would not cave in, so Jens and Hleb BOOKED single-rooms THEMSELVES in the same hotel respectively



Babbel found out and gave them a penalty

but Hleb could not be bothered so he asked his sister to book a new room in her name instead , which she did



Jens also moans about Swabian stingyness

once, VfB had a friendly up north (St Pauli , I think)

for some reason, they missed their plane back to Stuttgart, and went back by train

they ended up in Regionalzügen and somewhere near Karlsruhe shared a compartment with a bunch of larger louts

Jens thinks the operational team manager responsible for this nonsense would have been SACKED immediately at Arsenal, but the Stuttgarters were just cost conscious

when Jens extended his contract at VfB by a year, his MAIN DEMAND was that the "home-team-lockerroom at VfB" would get NEW FLOOR TILES



the GIANT says that they were so worn out and unhygenic looking that he even feared for the safety/hygene of his feet in his shower-sandals

the club had simply been too STINGY once again to even offer CLEAN facilities



VfB will NEVER become one of the greats in Europe

but then again, neither will HSV (unless they get MAGATH)

there is also a good anecdote about Schalke's Eurofighters that supports my "Dutch coaches are shite" theory by at least 7%

TO THE DISMAY OF THE PLAYERS

who felt they were not training nearly HARD ENOUGH

the MANNSCHAFT then decided to have EXTRA training sessions WITHOUT the coach

on a voluntary basis

out of 24 players something like 21 turned up

the whole thing led to an ECLAT

when the entire squad went to the Sportstudio to defend "undermining" the coach

Lehmann points out that these experiences were the BIRTH-MOMENT of the legendary EUROFIGHTERS that would fight for each other like LIONS and end up winning the UEFA Cup

The last one. But I reckon that would have been Paddy and some of the others – if Titi had had anything to do with it he'd have sorted the others out and made them behave, and in the process got Jens to sing a song.
