    In The Last 16 Seasons:
    • Milan got to 6 champions league finals
    • 5 finals went to penalties
    • 8 times a domestic league and champions league double occurred
    • Juventus got to the finals 4 times and lost every time they finished 1st in Serie A
    • 3 finals involved 2 teams from the same league
You've seen the stats, now i want to know in your opinion how many times did the best team (on the day or throughout the CL) did not win the final?

Which years did the Champions League winners truly represent the best team in Europe that season?

Interesting to note there has only ever been 3 finals involving the winners of their respective league. Seems that balancing the league and champions league is not such a modern phenomena

I started really following form 00/01 so the only ones I can say:

    Bayern 00/01
    Real Madrid 01/02
    Barcelona 05/06
    Milan 06/07

In 03 I think Juve were better then Milan the result could very well have been different had Nedved not been suspended. Even then it still went to penalties. Liverpool and Porto explain themselves. Reason I don't think Man Utd in 08 is that I thought Chelsea were just as good and the fact they both beat each other in the league and it took penalties in the end and a giant screw up by Terry not to win shows how small the margin was.

I think last season it was almost impossible to split us and Chelsea. In 99 it was between us and Bayern. They outplayed us in the final but we were missing our two central midfielders and the earlier games had both been draws.

Missing your two best central midfielders is a lot tougher than missing a left back and one striker. I reckon you already know that.

It's still in the same area which is the difference.

It's still 2 players though. Bayern's players were out due to injury which is more unlucky while Scholes and Keane were out due to suspension which was deserved after they hacked the shit out of Zidane and Davids in the previous round.

Papa Lazarazou and El Bear were big losses but at that time, they still had more than enough cover. Losing the entire engine of your midfield (and let's be fair - both were world class footballer) is far worse.

Being suspended is not "losing your players" as though its unlucky. Had any of their yellow cards been completely undeserved, sure that's unlucky. But suspensions are there for a reason, you can't claim they should have been in the final when you might not have got there had they not committed those yellow card offenses. If they got carded for offenses that didn't help the team then it's their own stupid fault.

Think Bobo has completely taken this away from what was the original point, in 1998/1999 the two best teams were Man United and Bayern Munich.

Blue, presumably these are the teams that definitely were the best in Europe that season? I disagree on 1996. Ajax were at least as good as Juve and in 1995 I think they (Ajax) were clearly the best team in Europe, beating Milan 3 times over to win the CL, if memory serves me correct.

Why does everybody have Bayern in '01? We beat ManU and Real Madrid home and away in the quarterfinals and semifinals. I believe the only game we lost in Europe was against Lyon at the end of the 2nd group phase after we had already clinched 1st in that group.

What more were we supposed to do?
