One day last week at Cobham, Frank Lampard as usual stayed out after training practicing skills on his own, and one exercise was to hit a row of balls from out near the corner flag, a yard behind the goal-line, on the curl into the goal.
Oh how handsomely that paid off in the Nou Camp!
There were questions from some as to whether he intentionally shot, or simply lifted the ball over the goalkeeper in the direction of the far post in Barcelona. There is no doubt. He shot! He has done it countless times at the training ground.
The Crossbar Challenge is a Chelsea game that has caught the imagination of the media and been given a lot of publicity. But scoring from behind the goal-line near the corner flag has long been another Chelsea game, and it is not ironic that Frank was playing it on his own last week.
This was without doubt one of his finest Chelsea goals. What was ironic was that it mirrored another one, the fantastic half-volley on the turn against Bayern Munich. In both, poor control in the first place put him in a difficult position, and in both his technique allowed him to score when the chance had really gone.

The Lampard goal reminds me one Athletic Madrid scored a couple of seasons ago by Vieri from an impossible angle too.
