Greatest Father & Son duo? Empty Greatest Father & Son duo?

Post by bluenine Tue Sep 29, 2009 4:21 pm

Taking a clue from the recent article at goal.com, who have been the most accomplished father & son duo in football??

    Some standout names include:

    Cesare & Paolo Maldini
    Jean & Youri Djorkaeff
    Miguel & Xabi Alonso
    Manuel Sanchis Sr & Jr
    Valentino & Sandro Mazzola

For me, its the last pair... the most talented of them all, both father and son equally gifted.

Pepe Reina's dad has also played in (and lost) a European cup final. I'm sure i've used that fact in a thread just like this! Serious deja vu.

I heard a lot about Valentino, and his record speaks for itself. He is regarded as a bigger legend in Italy than his more successful son.

That Sandro is an Inter legend only helps their case Twisted Evil

Have to agree with Bluey on this one. In terms of reputation then it has to be the Mazzola's. One played in Il Grande Torino and the other in Il Grande Inter.

ok Good as the others are, those two were absolutely exceptional. If it hadn't been for the Superga Disaster, Valentino Mazzola may well have been remembered as the greatest player Italy ever produced. He was a total footballer before it became fashionable to use that term.

The Superga Disaster was 60 years ago. Every year the anniversary of the disaster is commemorated by football fans - this unites Juventus and Torino fans - determined to honour their memory. There is a service at the Basilica f Superga and it shows footage of the great Valentino in his prime, so even if Bluey hasn't seen Valentino play, I have and he was some player. The guy was incredible. Il Grande Torino records still survive today. That was an incredible team.

Brian and Nigel Clough - an underated duo at least. Brian was a decent player until injury forced him to quit early.

Someone has to stand up for Ronald; he gets such a bad press these days. Wink Ronald Koeman was a fantastic player though and nobody can take that away from him. Shame about his coaching though.
