Cannavaro fails drugs test

Fabio Cannavaro failed a drugs test after taking emergency medicine, but a paperwork error means he risks suspension.

The Italy captain was stung by a wasp during a training session and was given a cortisone-based treatment, which usually would be considered acceptable.

However, the medical staff failed to provide a piece of the paperwork confirming this course of action and so an inquiry has been opened.

As the request for permission had not been completed, the Juventus defender was tested and found positive for cortisone.

Cannavaro will be interrogated by the CONI (Italian Olympic Committee) over the next few days.

It is most likely a matter of red tape and should be cleared up relatively quickly.

The 2006 World Cup and Ballon d’Or winner is suspended for Saturday’s Republic of Ireland match anyway, but this situation could in theory rule him out of next Wednesday’s encounter with Cyprus too.

Doesn't sound like much of a case. I mean not a serious doping case, bar the player involved.

If it would have been 3rd/4th generation EPO it would have been serious. Anwyay CONI themselves are probably more unreliable when it comes to drugs than Cannavaro. They were dubious mid 90s for sure.

English FA banned Sheffied Utd goalie Paddy Kenny for nine months for testing positive for ephedrine, which was apparently in a cold medicine he took. Apparently he got off lightly as they could have banned him for two years

I don't think this looks serious at all. Reports say that Cannavaro was administered the drug for a wasp sting and then the required paperwork was lacking. I don't think any doping is involved in this one. Should get sorted out in some time.

I seem to remember I was given cortisone for a wasp sting once when I was a kid. Surely just a matter of red tape, just as a professional athlete you're supposed to go through all the proper channels...

Mate, Paddy Kenny was clearly using ephedrine to slim down. Did you not see him at the end of last season, compared to the 10 years before? Unless he was anorexic then there isn't another excuse tbh.
