The piece of news that seemed a joke or madness is now reality. After accepting the proposal made to the leadership, the German Lothar Mattäus has assumed as Racing’s coach today. The president, Rodolfo Molina, has already told the players.

“Matthäus accepted the proposal made by the club and is now the new coach,” said spokesmen from Racing Club. Today after the match against Lanus, Mr Molina will confirm the news over a press conference.

So far no leader of Racing has officialy spoken about the new coach’s arrival, because they wnated to be certain before disclosing the news. Now that they are, they’ll officially give the news today shortly after 20 hs, in the Avellaneda stadium.

Matthäus would be arriving to Buenos Aires on Wednesday or Thursday next week, and then it will be decided whether he will start with the match against Atletico Tucuman or a week later against Godoy Cruz, in Mendoza.

Early versions reported that the German coach would have demanded a contract for a million dollars, a room in a five star hotel, a bullet-proof vehicle, and a personal translator. But Racing has denied those stories.

“Those requests were never made. On the contrary, he’s not a stiff man. He’s open minded and he knows very well where he’s going,” said Racing’s leader.

“We offered him to live in an upscale hotel, at our initiative, not by his request.” And then he said with irony: “What did you expect, that we asked him to live in a ’hostel’?”

The truth is that nothing has been clarified regarding his contract, the bullet-proof car, and the personal translator. But considering the German’s status, it is thought that he will be given everything that he requests. He’s meant to bring economic benefits to Avellaneda’s entity.

    I´ll give him three months.
What a shame Gemany´s best player of the last three decades deserves a job in the Bunesliga, even if it´s Hertha or Bochum.

Tim Vickery's BBC Blog is about Europeans going to SA.

I didn't know that the 1st of Peru's 2 Copa America wins was under an English coach.

"Jack Greenwell from England took Peru to victory in the 1939 Copa America"
