River Plate midfielder Diego Buonanotte will be out of action for at least seven months after he was involved in a car crash which killed three of his friends on Saturday.
The 21-year-old Argentinian, who was airlifted to hospital in Buenos Aires following the accident, is out of any immediate danger but club doctor Horacio Cavallieri admits the injuries to his lung remain a concern.
"Diego is stable but we are continuing waiting,'' he said. "We know that the next 72 hours are those where the risk is greatest.
"The fractures can wait, the priority is the lung. At the moment he is recovering as has been foreseen. The recovery period is an estimated seven months.''
Cavallieri added: "He is sedated but you can talk to him because he is conscious. We have not mentioned at all what happened in the accident. He hasn't asked us either. We don't want him to watch television. We will supply a group of psychologists and psychiatrists to help him.''
Buonanotte is regarded as one of Argentina's most promising players and was reportedly a target for Sunderland and Atletico Madrid.
The accident occurred just before 7am on Saturday when the car crashed into a tree as the group were returning to Buonanotte's hometown, not far from Buenos Aires.
