Liverpool are worried the knee injury that has recently sidelined Fernando Torres could keep the star striker out for the rest of the season - and even the World Cup
Torres, who was due to fly to Barcelona to see a knee specialist, has been unable to make the trip because of the recent flying ban, due to the volcanic eruption in Iceland that has made Britain a no-fly zone.
But, according to the Sunday Mirror, Anfield medical staff believe Torres' recent injury may only be fixed by the Spaniard going under the surgeon's knife, a move that would keep him out of the rest of Liverpool's season, and could even see him miss the World Cup.
"We are not sure whether he will play again this season. He needs to see the specialist and he will tell us whether Fernando needs an operation and when he will be back." Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is quoted as saying in the paper.
The 26-year-old goal ace was hoping to get the all-clear to face West Ham at Anfield on Tuesday (NZT) but he is now more than likely to miss the trip to his former club, Atletico Madrid in the semi-final first leg of the Europa League on Friday, with club insiders worried that only an operation will work - bringing a premature end to a season that has already been wrecked by injury.
Would be terrible news for Liverpool (Europa Ligua) and for Spain (after Fabregas).
