AFAIK, McClaren didn't know the language when he joined Twente either. A lot of people underestimated him back then and thought that he would be a disaster.

With many foreigners in the team, and basically everyone speaking English these days, I don't think that the language will be that much of a problem. Time will tell, but I'll at least give him the benefit of doubt.

Despite being champions last season, and all the money they have to spend, Wolfsburg are still a 'graue Maus', so the additional publicity the McClaren's appointment brings is very welcome.
