I'd rate Uruguay but i cant forget that game against Argentina AT HOME they were dreadful and they're too violent also. A decent team will put them out(include S Korea in that)

Uruguay have yet to concede a goal, they have a lot of fire power upfront and a very astute coach...L r dd wrote:I'd rate Uruguay but i cant forget that game against Argentina AT HOME they were dreadful and they're too violent also. A decent team will put them out(include S Korea in that)

That was then. What happened in qualification counts for little now.
Their path to the semis looks doable.

South Korea? Japan? USA in 1994, before the official start of the professional football league MLS in 1996?
All of them made it to the second round at least.

One bad game for SA really. They were leading and had a decent match against Mexico. They beat France. Just the Uruguay game fucked them up. I don't think they were that bad.

I'm not saying they were crap, just stating facts. It's the first time that the host didn't make it to the second round.
Football is not that popular in South Africa, can't see this WC change much about that.

On paper? Definitely. But France didn't even turn up this time, and Mexico looked very vulnerable at the back. Uruguay were probably the only strong, fully convincing team in their group. What actually happens on the pitch counts.

France were a disgrace.
Nobody thought Domenech was a decent manager before the WC. And now the French players have managed to make Domenech look good in the powerbattle. At least he's not coming out of this with the worse name.

That is I was thinking as well. If they had been a bit more clinical we would be talking about how good they were because they have been creating enough chances and played some good football as well. I didn't see the game against Uruguay but based on the two games against France and Mexico they should have 6 points and several goals to go along with it.L r dd wrote:One bad game for SA really. Compared to what people expected I think they have done fine but compared to their actual quality plus the weakness of France they should have gone through.
Blut
My only point was that the stat about hosting nations is a bit misrepresenting because normally it is quite good teams that get the World Cup but obviously I know there is exceptions like with South Korea and Japan or USA.

Yeah, I was generally impressed with South Africa. They atleast tried to entertain and work for their home fans as the host country. I mean they were never going to achieve miracles, but for anyone rooting on the African Nations there were bigger disappointments on the continenent this World Cup.
Suarez scored, and Uruguay will probably make it past whoever finishes 2nd in the snoozefest of Group B, so I'm happy for them

2 days ago I made my picks for the 3rd round of games in the FIFA online predictor, and put my joker (double points) on a South Africa win. This morning I chickened out, changed the result to draw, and moved my joker to a draw in the Mexico-Uruguay game
Good pair of games though, at least there was some drama and it didn't just fizzle out. Uruguay looking impressive, and they could go all the way to the semifinals Could this be a return for the oldest "superpower" of football?

I don't think so, cause they have a small population of 4 million, but they can come back to the international scene and reach the quarters now and then. They are very brave people.

I think the players played a big part in lineups and tactics. Domenech was weak - He probably didn't play Gurcouff (sp) in most games because Ribery and some other players said no.

Hugo Lloris, Bacary Sagna and Yoann Gourcuff were all prepared to ignore France’s strike on Sunday, according to a report on the website of Le Nouvel Observateur, a weekly news magazine, nearly coming to blows with several of the squad’s senior members over the incident.
France were eliminated from the World Cup on Tuesday, but their entire campaign has been hugely controversial. After a falling out between Nicolas Anelka and coach Raymond Domenech at half-time of the 2-0 reverse against Mexico, les Bleus refused to train on Sunday. But it now seems not all the players were unanimously in favour of the strike.
Lloris, Sagna and Gourcuff reportedly wanted to train, making their feelings known on the bus that the players were kept on. It is suggested that Franck Ribery, Eric Abidal and Patrice Evra were vehemently against the idea and nearly came to blows with their colleagues over the incident. France Football states that “the fight was narrowly averted”.
Evra, who captained the side in their opening two matches before dropping to the bench for Tuesday’s finale against South Africa, has already stated that he will reveal all that transpired behind the scenes in the France dressing room in a press conference later this week.

Maybe the English one should follow suit.
