    Osvaldo was Italy's worst player. Marchisio was Italy's best.

    Uruguay was spent from playing qualifiers and having to travel to Europe. They played with many subs understandably and were able to beat Italia in their house. Not bad for Uruguay.

    Yeah, but this is worse I think.

    Totti broke his leg, which is better than tearing ligaments, so his injury didn't allow him match fitness, but he was fresh for the World Cup. And the way Lippi used the squad his relative rustiness wasn't a catastrophe.

    Cassano's problem is a bit serious. Will Prandelli risk playing him, and what will more time off do in terms of kilos? Add to this Giuseppe Rossi's injury, and it totally sucks.

    These injuries are tragic (tho I am with abundance, Totti's injury was a bigger worry for me). Italy need at least one of Cassano or Rossi to be fit & in form for the Euro's - they formed a critical part of Prandelli's formation.

    Posted the following on another thread, what do you guys think:

    As long as Italy avoid Portugal and France in the group stage, I would be happy with the draw. If Italy draw Ukraine or Poland, that would be just awesome.

    Other than that, I am quietly optimistic about Italy's Euro2012 campaign, even after the Rossi-Cassano double blow (hope they will be fit by then). Italy have finally re-discovered their historic mentality, we can start hoping again... Almost the entire team is already selected:

    GK: Buffon, Sirigu, De Sanctis
    Def: Chiellini, Bonucci, Ranocchia, Barzagli, Maggio, Criscito, Balzaretti, Abate/Casani
    Mid: Pirlo, Montolivo, De Rossi, Marchisio, Aquilani, Motta, Nocerino/Pepe
    Str: Cassano, Rossi, Balotelli, Pazzini, Matri/Osvaldo

    We already more or less know the starting line up & shape, and its very Italian-style:

    Buffon
    Maggio - Bonucci - Ranocchia - Chiellini
    De Rossi - Pirlo - Marchisio
    Montolivo
    Cassano -------
    Balotelli

    We already know the most likely back ups in case of injury: Viviano, Cassani, Ogbonna, Astori, Giovinco, Pepe, Osvaldo, Gilardino

    I am sure if some other player shows excellent form over the next 6 months, Prandelli can make an adjustment or two. But it is great to have created a group so quickly, who are starting to get comfortable with each other already. This has been a very well planned, structured re-engineering of the Azzurri. Prandelli has accomplished in 18 months what most coaches would take 3 years to complete. I am satisfied.

    Prandelli's Italy so far relies more on attacking fullbacks to cover the wings.

    There are a couple of young wingers who could be tried, if Prandelli was so inclined - Cerci & Schelotto both look the part.

    The Azzurri are in serious trouble. Rossi is definitely ruled out now with his new injury, and Cassano is yet to play... Italy are without a fantasista, the most critical element of Prandelli's tactics. The striker situation isn't looking that good either - Balotelli is self destructing as usual, Pazzini (5 goals) has proven himself to be shite, Gila (5) is having a shite season, Iaquinta (0?) & Quagliarella (4) have had shite injury led seasons too. Others like Matri (10) & Borriello (0?) have been very average.

    One option would be to recall some of the oldies... Di Natale (20) & Miccoli (12) are the top scoring Italians in Serie A. Del Piero and Totti are proving to be useful supersubs.

    Or give a chance to some unheralded younger players like Osvaldo (10), Borini (9) and Destro (Cool. Perhaps the fantasista will have to be Giovinco (10) who is having a great season, but he is more of a trequartista.

    All in all, Prandelli's Azzurri are in big trouble. If I have to pick 6 forwards now, I would probably go for (assuming fitness):

    Cassano, Balotelli, Giovinco, Di Natale, Osvaldo, and Miccoli!!

    I doubt Prandelli will be up for taking both Di Natale & Miccoli, but he must take at least 1 of them now. There are no options.

    Italys strike force for the Euros should be Cassano just behind Di Natale ,Totti,Miccoli and Matri as subs.I put Matri in there because he has more of a physical presence than the others and might be a good option.

    I think Prandelli considering 2 old strikers (Di Natale & Miccoli) is a stretch, expecting a third (Totti) would be unrealistic...

    'Lo Zio' hardly played in the 90s after that expulsion v Norway until France98. Mad

    Even that famous Parma defence - Bucci - Mussi, Apolloni, Minotti, Benarrivo couldn't get a look-in most of the time! Or Ferrara!

    Still say that Euro96 was a disaster thanks to the bland selection by Sacchi who had completely lost it by then, we really should have taken that tournament Mad

    Yeah, Sacchi was not a fan of "Lo Zio", but he still played like 20 games in the 90s. He is just too big a legend to ignore, my friend. Smile

    Talking about that legendary Parma defense, lets not forget the likes of Cannavaro, Thuram and Sensini. That was some defense!! There just aren't that many classic defenders these days as there used to be in the 90s.

    Sacchi, just don't get me started. Hated that guy. No Baggio at Euro96 was like a crime deserving public flogging!

    There are several surprise new faces in the 32-man long-list for Italy at Euro 2012, including Mattia Destro, Antonio Di Natale, Ezequiel Schelotto and Marco Verratti.

    Coach Cesare Prandelli named his squad this evening, although the Juventus, Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain players won’t begin training until next week, as they still have official commitments at club level.

    Novelties include Rubin Kazan defender Salvatore Bocchetti and Udinese veteran Di Natale, who have not played under Prandelli’s reign before.

    The real surprises are in younger players who have not figured in the senior Italy squad, such as Siena striker Destro, Juventus man Emanuele Giaccherini, Atalanta winger Schelotto, 19-year-old Pescara creative midfielder Verratti and Bologna midfielder Alessandro Diamanti.

    Giorgio Chiellini’s presence depends on tests, as he limped off during today’s 3-1 win over Atalanta with a suspected thigh strain.

    The list will be cut down to the final 23 for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine on May 29.

    Meanwhile, it has been reported that Gigi Riva will not be travelling with the Italy squad for this competition due to ill health.

    Goalkeepers: Buffon (Juventus), De Sanctis (Napoli), Sirigu (Paris St. Germain), Viviano (Palermo);

    Defenders: Abate (Milan), Astori (Cagliari), Balzaretti (Palermo), Barzagli (Juventus), Bocchetti (Rubin Kazan), Bonucci (Juventus),
    Chiellini (Juventus), Criscito (Zenit San Pietroburgo), Maggio (Napoli), Ogbonna (Torino), Ranocchia (Inter);

    Midfielders: Cigarini (Atalanta), De Rossi (Roma), Diamanti (Bologna), Giaccherini (Juventus),
    Marchisio (Juventus), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Thiago Motta (Paris St. Germain),
    Nocerino (Milan), Pirlo (Juventus),Schelotto (Atalanta), Verratti (Pescara);

    Goalkeepers: Buffon (Juventus), De Sanctis (Napoli), Sirigu (Paris St. Germain), Viviano (Palermo);

    Defenders: Abate (Milan), Astori (Cagliari), Balzaretti (Palermo), Barzagli (Juventus), Bocchetti (Rubin Kazan), Bonucci (Juventus),
    Chiellini (Juventus), Criscito (Zenit San Pietroburgo), Maggio (Napoli), Ogbonna (Torino), Ranocchia (Inter);

    Midfielders: Cigarini (Atalanta), De Rossi (Roma), Diamanti (Bologna), Giaccherini (Juventus),
    Marchisio (Juventus), Montolivo (Fiorentina), Thiago Motta (Paris St. Germain),
    Nocerino (Milan), Pirlo (Juventus),Schelotto (Atalanta), Verratti (Pescara);

    Forwards: Balotelli (Manchester City), Borini (Roma), Cassano (Milan), Destro (Siena), Di Natale (Udinese), Giovinco (Parma)

    Some surprise names there. Did not expect to see Bocchetti there, he must have shown some form at Rubin to merit this - I haven't really been following him. Diamanti is also a surprise for me, while his form for Bologna has been good, I don't think he has done enough to merit a place. Verratti is also a surprise, I have heard that he is like the next Pirlo, but the kid has no exposure at the top level yet... a very premature call up. I think its highly unlikely that any of these 3 will make the final squad.

    The others are pretty standard call ups, quite on the expected lines. A bit surprised not to see Osvaldo there, thought he was a Prandelli favorite. Glad that Prandelli ignored Matri/Pazzini/Gila/Borriello - those are mediocre strikers not worthy of the shirt.

    Some awesome call ups, in line with Prandelli's young+form policy, specially Cigarini, Giaccherini, Schelotto, Borini & Destro.

    It is so ironic (and so Inter) that we sold our promising youth product Destro for 6m, and spent double that to get Pazzini, and a year later, Destro replaces Pazzini in the NT.

    I can understand why... I would pick Di Natale, Cassano & Giovinco over Quag on current form. And Borini, Balotelli, & Destro are different type of forwards, I guess Prandelli will pick one out of Borini & Destro in the final 23.

    Sadly its either quality strikers who are too old, have had serious injury issues, or others who are just mediocre. In the striker department, I think Prandelli has done well.

    Every player that I wanted in the squad, is present in that shortlist... that has never happened before! Either that's a sad reflection on the depth of quality talent in Italy, or just the sensible selection approach based on form. Perhaps a bit of both.

    Trying to second guess Prandelli's starting line up:

    Buffon
    Maggio - Barzagli - Ranocchia - Chiellini
    De Rossi - Pirlo - Motta
    Montolivo
    Cassano - Balotelli

    The ones in bold are the question marks.

    Ranocchia's poor form could make him lose his place, with either Chiellini replacing him in the middle (with Criscito/Bocchetti at LB) or Bonucci/Astori/Ogbonna/Bocchetti replacing him like-to-like.

    Montolivo is likely to start, though Prandelli may be tempted to use Giovinco as a trequartista. Or put Motta in that place, and Marchisio in his place.

    Balotelli, you just cannot trust him to be a starter. Maybe Borini/Destro will replace him like to like, though I would love to see Di Natale in his place, Prandelli is unlikely to start with Cassano-Di Natale combo (as that negates the advantage of Maggio's crosses). I think Di Natale is more of a Cassano back up, or a tactical option for a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3. Giovinco is also most likely an insurance policy on Cassano, rather than a trequartista option.

    If only Inter could provide Samuel, Sneijder, & Milito to Prandelli in place of the ones in bold, Italy would be a serious contender!!

    I think Bonucci could well take Ranocchia's place and we'll have a near complete Juve backline.

    Agree on Giovinco - he will be the super sub and could well take Montolivo's place as the tournament goes on. I think Marchisio will start over Motta.

    I have a feeling he may start Di Natale against Spain. In the end he will have to rotate between Di Natale/Balotelli/Cassano because the latter can not play 90 minutes in every game.

    It is ironical that you pick on Balotelli when there is Motta in the team.... whether its conscious on your part or not, this is a form of racism.

    Balotelli is as Italian as anyone else. Your suggestion is ridiculous.

    Motta on the other hand........

    Yea, born in italy, raised in italy, spent all his life in italy, fluent in italian, who's the ghanaian?

    Pick on Thiago Motta or the DONKEY. That's the real marriages of convenience.
