This must be a German thing, worrying about how the success of others will reflect upon themselves. Otto made a similar comment about Brazil, that it would reflect badly on Germany because they would be 2 gold stars clear of the mannschaft!
I couldn't care less how it would reflect upon England if Spain or Holland were to win the World Cup - I think both are deserved of celebrating success, given the near misses in the past and that Germans, Brazilians and Argentinians have all had the opportunity to enjoy celebrating winning the biggest prize on Earth in relatively recent years

What near misses have Spain had in the past? They havn't gone further than the quarter finals in 60 years.

I was actually referring to Holland with that comment, but Spain have played far better than their results have shown in previous World Cups. They also play much more attractive football than the likes of Italy and England, and have done so now for sometime.

I would be more impressed with Spain if they could play some of that football against a good side at an important stage.BoBo Vieri 32 wrote:Noah and the Bale wrote:BoBo Vieri 32 wrote:Noah and the Bale wrote:blutgraetsche wrote:Ever thought about the consequences for England of having those....erm...underachievers winning the cup? Even at this world cup, i havn't seen this attractive football of theirs.
I've only really seen Spain at 3 previous World Cup's, so hard to pass judgement. They're a good passing side but their balls seems to shrink come the KO stages.

It's not that it would 'reflect' on us, but the simple fact that we see us as a major footballing nation, a powerhouse, and hence the other powerhouses as competition. Why do Liverpool fans care that their rival Manchester United doesn't win more league titles than they have?
So from the German perspective, Holland or Spain winning the title would be a lot more 'acceptable' in the grand scheme of things, even if the former is the arch rival. For England however, I'm not sure at all if this should be the case. But maybe you have given up the competitive edge completely by now...

nope, more of a "Or if your team is out" since you all don't rate us much and therefore assuming we're already out.
They were pretty good 2 years ago - I thought they will be as boring as they are now there, but thanks to quality of their counter attacks, they were great to watch.EM Seleção e Selecção wrote:Holland don't play good football they haven't since 2000.
I fully get your point and perhaps im raising the bar too high but to be honest im mostly saying it in reaction to the crazy standards that have been set by them by the media and my football friends who hype them to death. Against good organised teams they have been too easy to stifle and I do take into account that they are meeting good teams. The best example is Italy in Euro 08 which they couldn't even create a single big chance. I didn't rate Germany too highly in 08 but this time around they would certainly count.kas wrote:Super Africa wrote:I would be more impressed with Spain if they could play some of that football against a good side at an important stage.BoBo Vieri 32 wrote:

You need to recognise the flaw in this line of reasoning that you keep using.
First, "good side at an important stage" is not only very rare but also subjective...you can twist it to suit your agenda. For example, does beating Germany in a Euro final meet that criteria? I'm sure you have some explanation to argue that it doesn't. Also, how many of these instances actually happen before they change from one off cases to consistent data that we can analyse?
Second, it is normal that any side, whether they're good, great, or the best ever, will not look as good against another good team as they would against a shit team. Let's take Spain's passing game as an example, of course a side that is well organised defensively and takes less risks in attack due to it being a knockout tie, will stifle Spain's play and restrict their attacking moves. Do you see what I'm trying to say here?
And yes, I know Spain have played poorly this world cup. I'm not arguing against that, but making a general point about the line of argument you used, because far too many people conveniently mix their use of cause-and-effect to suit their particular football opinions.
