Re: Manchester United 2006/2007
Alan Smith made his first appearance since suffering a serious leg injury in February when he played for Manchester United's reserve team on Monday night.
Smith featured for 66 minutes of United's 7-2 Lancashire Senior Cup win over Preston at Deepdale.
He did not find the net but played in his usual bustling style.
The 25-year-old broke his leg and dislocated an ankle during the FA Cup defeat to Liverpool and was expected to be out for the rest of the year.
Smith declared himself satisfied with his performance, saying: "I have worked hard for that all through the summer.
"That is what my goal has been. Playing for the reserves is a step up from training and hopefully, in a few weeks time I will have had some more reserve games and be able to make the step up to the first team.
"The first half I felt okay but I started to get a bit tired 15 minutes into the second half, which is why I came off.
"I just need a few matches under my belt, although I think I could have played all night and not scored.
"But my movement was okay and I just need to build up my strength a little bit."
With no replacement in sight for the departed Ruud van Nistelrooy, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has already declared his intention to use Smith as an orthodox striker this season, rather than in midfield as in the past.
Smith did have the occasional glimpse of goal, with his best effort coming when he tested Preston keeper Andy Lonergan with an early curling effort.
But he wasted two chances, screwing a shot wide after being set up by Liam Miller and then firing wide with a mis-hit volley just after half-time.
It was still a comfortable enough return for the former Leeds forward, which ended when he was replaced by Sean Evans midway through the second half.
Giuseppe Rossi and Phil Marsh both scored twice for United and Chris Eagles, Danny Rose and David Jones were also on target for the Red Devils.

Man Utd boss Ferguson considers Makoun
tribalfooball.com - August 22, 2006
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is considering reviving interest in Lille midfielder Jean Makoun.
Makoun was scouted last season by Ferguson and is back on the Scot's radar as Bayern Munich refuse to do business over Owen Hargreaves.
Linked to Makoun- he could do a job i suppose

Bayern warn United
stuart mathieson
BAYERN Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has threatened to report Manchester United to FIFA if they do not end their pursuit of Owen Hargreaves.
Bayern on Friday told United “in no uncertain terms” to end their interest in the midfielder.
However, even the 25-year-old England international himself has failed to accept the German club’s decision not to listen to any offers.
Rummenigge has now reiterated Bayern’s stance and warned United to steer clear, otherwise he could get world football’s governing body involved.
“We have told Manchester United to drop their interest, or we will have to turn to FIFA,” he told Munich’s Tz newspaper.
“A club can only contact a player when the club, who owns the player’s registration, is in agreement.
“We are not Hamburg, who let Khalid Boulahrouz go at the first sign he wants out. We are FC Bayern.
“We do not just let anybody go - the employer decides here, not the employee.”

Re: Manchester United 2006/2007
Ronaldo awaits stern test
Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo believes the game at Charlton will be a massive test for him following what happened at the World Cup.
Ronaldo angered many supporters during Portugal's quarter final against The Three Lions, with Wayne Rooney's sending off and England's subsequent defeat blamed squarely on the 21-year-old.
In his first Premiership game of the season Ronaldo was given a warm reception by the Old Trafford crowd and linked up superbly with Rooney as United crushed Fulham 5-1.
However, he is expecting a hostile welcome from Charlton fans when The Red Devils take to the road for the first time on Wednesday evening.
"The away games are going to be more complicated but I'm staying calm,"
Ronaldo is taking the positives from the game against Fulham though, and insists that he will stay focused on his football should the boo boys start up.
"In the home game everything went well, it was relaxed, easy," he reflected.
"But I do know the next game will be a lot more complicated as it's the first away one.
"I'll try to put it out of my mind and do my best."

Only if Manu continues the talks with Hagreaves after this official stament, I can see them field a complaint. But it simply was not necessary so far.

Hopefully cheaper than that.
The talk in April was £5 million but Lille wanted a bit more. £7 - 8 million would do.

Lille want 12 Million for Makoun
I'm not being over confident Senna's agent came out and said the deal isn't dead yet and to see what happens in the next few days. Also teh Pires inury will have little effect on Villareal they have a lot of options now they already signed a Senna replacement
