Ridiculous penalty decision - has to be intentional or unnatural movement of the arm.
Lescott was looking away and Lev Yashin in his prime couldn't have intentionally handballed that if he was facing it.
There's nothing like impartial commentary - and that was nothing like impartial commentary.
Absolutely disgraceful and someone clearly had a word in Ray's ear about it hence the sudden apology.

They always give pens when the arms are in an unnatural position though..he did have them high, I dont think they were blocking his face were they?

Yep, that was clearly in the unnatural category. No reason to lift his arms up like that.

Can't argue with that penalty Pierre.
An apparent International Class defender like Joleen should know better than raise his arms. His hands were impeding the shot well away from his body, and thus is a clear penalty.
(waiver: this opinion is in no way brought to you by someone still aggrieved with Stoke's 3 handballs last night)

Someone on Twitter made a good point. Why would someone with a face like Lescott bother trying to protect it with his hands anyway?

It was the right arm and that wasn't very high or far out from his body - its not a pen according to the rules but football fans seldom give a shit about the rules when it comes to handball pens.

So there will be Walcott against Kolarov or Zabaleta - sounds like City will have a serious problem on their left side.

Fuck of Ray Wilkins, the most biased commentator ever calling the Chelsea players by there first names....not to mention he treats the viewers like retards by having the need to explain every little thing what happens in the game.He needs to shut the fuck up or be sacked.
It's a disgrace that United are only 2 point behind City this season,City have been far better.IMO you should only get 2 points if you only win by 1 goal,it would be much more fair giving the incentive for teams to attack more and reward teams like City who constantly thrash opponents.

Law 12 states if hand is unnatural position it's a penalty. As unnatural position is the only way to deduce if deliberate or not.
Joleen's arms were in an unnaturally high position. Ref was right to give it

Pretty amazing for him to deliberately handle the ball without even being able to see it.

If you randomly put your arms out hoing to cover some the area where a ball could go whilst trying to cover some of the other areas with the rest of your body that's diliberate and he doen't need to see the ball in flight.Pierre Littbarski wrote:Noah und der Bale wrote:Law 12 states if hand is unnatural position it's a penalty. Im gutted with that result. At 1-0 we were well on top playng some brilliant stuff...Silva should have had a nailed on pen..that decision cost us. We werent out played, that decision... a red card and a pen cost us. Still we are top of the league and played U*d, Chelsea, Spurs and Liverpool all away. We've reacted well to defeats in the champs and i expect us to do the same to this. I still think we are the best team in the league and will win it.

Don't think Lescott deliberately handled it, but by putting his arms above his head he left Clattenburg with little choice given the shot was probably goal bound. He should know better

Lescott is side-on, looking at the ball and as the shot is taken he lifts his right leg and both his arms. You could argue his right arm is up to protect his face, but it hits him on the raised left arm. The only reason he has to raise that arm like that is to make himself bigger to block the shot - hence deliberate handball, penalty.

It hits the lower of the 2 arms and the shot is very powerful - slo mo makes it look worse.

it was the kind of penalty to you give to a team as a follow up to a soft 2nd yellow. It's impossible to feel sorry for City, until you remember that Chelsea are essentially the same deal 5 years down the line.

Only in England would Lampard get such bizarre hero-worshipping plaudits for coming on late off the bench (having been justly dropped given his inability to influence games positively from "midfield" these days), having little impact on the game and scoring a penalty
If he was not the designated taker having missed his last ones that makes it even worse.
Frank Lampard the hero at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea subject Manchester City to first defeat of the season

Only in the mind of a German would the words of a few hacks buried firmly in the old boys network equate to the entire country
Exactly how many people do you think actually hero worship Lampard on these shores?
Wasn't it only a few weeks ago I was saying how pointless a player he is these days and you and Debaser were sticking up for him?
PS - Modric has absolutely nothing on Bobby Pires

I cannot remember where you wrote it before, but I absolutely agree that the penalty taker should be the designated one, unless for some reason he is off the pitch, then it should be the designated backup etc. It is not there to make people feel better, boost confidence or goal tallies etc.
On another note I am surprised that Mata, the new boy, is the designated penalty taker unless they had some sort of competition and he won, as I thought Drogba and Lampard would both be vying for it.

That shouldn't matter...the one with the best penalty taking technique should be the taker, unless the coach is in the "experience matters" camp (in terms of pressure etc.)

Allez was indeed correct about penalties going to designated taker. Lampard I imagine wanted the glory / to stick it up AVB. His comments after the game saying he doesn't know why he's been dropped are pretty disruptive. We all know why you've been dropped Fwank, just take it on the chin. Thinks he's bigger than the club I imagine

PS John Matter was the absolute mutts nutts again last night, not only in how he played but patently ignoring Yaya Toure's pathetic wind up
I can't believe Arsenal refused to pay out the 17 million or whatever it was originally that Valencia wanted for John.
Actually, I can. And it's delightful to see him not playing for Arsenal.
Great player, great attitude. I would like to think that when he eventually moves to Barca or Madrid, he will retain his ability to stand up when being slapped by the opposition. Although I imagine a few training sessions with Busquets and co. will stamp out that kind of behaviour

Done. *
It was 110% who pointed out the designation issue; yeah I'd been making the point re any supposed dispute between Robben and Gomez. Agree with Kas, it should indeed be the player with the best penalty technique, or whoever is the best taker for any other reason.
*did you know what Gordon Brown's dad was called? Big surprise eh
