Messi will go down as the GOAT, but fuck him, Iniesta won b2b Euros, that's an insane achievement. And Xavi should have won at least one. But they want only goalscorers it seems.

Can you be a midfielder and also an attacking player? THINK ABOUT IT

If this is to award talent and consistency in 2012 then Messi beats Iniesta every time.

Iniesta should win the b2b Euros award, and xavi should win the best midfielder during messi's era award, but unfortunately those awards don't actually exist.

Forgetting Xavi, Iniesta & Spain for a bit, I think it's a shame that Messi/Ronaldo have become so dominant that achievements such as Drogba & Cech stealing the CL for Chelsea, and Pirlo going to Juventus, having an unbeaten season with them and then inspiring an unfancied Italy to the Euro final haven't been acknowledged.

Also for coach of the year - what about Jurgen Klopp? A league(back2back)and cup double winner in Germany plus topping what was the CL's hardest group.

If their wasn't a feeling that Chelsea didn't steal the cl then drogba would have been in with a chance.

Pirlo should have been in with a chance though. Winning with jive then playing well at the euros.

That's the point though Messiah. Chelsea did get lucky that they faced wasteful teams - but even with all that luck, No Drogba and they never could have won playing in the style they did. No other striker can do so much with so little.

Yeah I get what you are saying and a few years ago it probably would have been the case. But messi has brought brilliance to such a consistent level. Where putting together a couple of truly brilliant games isn't enough to win these things anymore. People want to see players doing it almost on a weekly basis.

Cannavaro will probably be the last player to be proclaimed the best player in the world based on a handful of games for a while.

To be honest I am happy about that bit has these type of things has grinder my gear for a while.

It would really be a same to see drogba be called the best based on just 6 or so games in a season.

But when players like pirlo stand no chance that's a shame.

Players like Pirlo have never stood a chance because these awards have almost almost almost almost always gone to goalscorers. Cannavaro and Sammer are two great exceptions. Ok maybe a third could be the year Nedved won it. Otherwise it's almost always a forward player. It's probably not fair but it's the way it is. That's probably why UEFA and FIFA started putting out the positional awards otherwise anyone whose number is less than 9 (sorry for the old school reference!) would not get any recognition.

What's so funny? It was still an achievement to get there. I doubt you bothered to watch much of the competition since you don't rate international football. So what the hell do you know about Drogba's achievements in international football?

Rock bottom. Drogba scored in 2 of 6 games, and was a disgrace in the final ( missing a pen in normal time, and going on to lose to the mighty and all conquering Zambia). So i have no idea how this is a relevant to the discussion, just shoe horning African into the conversation as usual.

No it isn't. It is a typically ignorant Eurocentric argument that pretends there has been no progress in African football. The ACN is a major international tournament whether you like it or not.

Nonsense. You might just as well say that Pirlo's performance at Euro's was just another failure. Drogba led his team to the final and they lost on penalties thanks to a great performance by Zambian goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene. Pirlo's team wasn't at the races against Spain. Drogba came closer to success at ACN than Pirlo did at Euros and combined not only with Champion's League, but FA Cup in what looked destined to be a completely crap season at Chelsea until rescued mainly by his performances in the semis and finals - the important matches. Only an idiot judges Drogba's legacy at Chelsea by the Champion's League success. It is his greatest achievement, but among many.

His place is already secure as one of Africa's great players; it's a question of precisely where he ends up. Football is a team game. John Terry has a Champion's League winner's medal without having played in the final. There are others too. Some played great football but still lost. Is that their fault, or do you win and lose as a team? Despite that Drogba's individual achievements are fantastic and establish him as one of Africa's greatest players. He hasn't achieved as much as Eto'o so he's lower on the list, but he's still there. No doubt if he had played for Barca and not Chelsea he'd get some respect from you.

I'm just glad Weah has made Messiah's list without winning a CL. Luckily he had his world player of the year award to help make up for it. Djimi Traoré's got a CL winners medal so he was above Drogba until that penalty kick I guess.
