Who else do you think should have been sent home and why? I think that Eriksson should have gone for that ridiculous booking of Giorgos Karagounis against Russia. There's no way that he dived. Contact was proved by replays as well. That put Karagounis - the Man of the Match and Greece's best player overall out of the quarter-final against Germany and they surely needed him. Whether it would have made the difference is moot, but best players should play, especially in circumstances like this - an outrageous card and there should have been consequences over it.

Euro 2012 Referees
Not sure if this has been reported much but two referees were sent home over their performances in the tournament. They are the Spaniard who made a pig's ear of Greece v Poland (sent home pretty quck) and the ref in England v Ukraine.

Re: Euro 2012 Referees
The refereeing in this tournament has been really really good IMO. Not just an absence of major errors (apart from the Ukraine 'goal' of course), but most refs have generally let the games flow.

Hmmm. You don't consider the sending off of Sokratis against Poland to be a major error, or the booking of Karagounis to have been major errors. Both missed the following match as a result. Also Howard Webb's refusal to even penalise Pepe for hauling back Petr Jiracek, let alone book him for a blatant foul. I'm all for letting games flow, but Webb takes it too far and he ends up making inconsistent decisions and losing control of matches.

No penalties awarded to Croatia, Denmark against Spain, Germany. No wonder it was all swept under the carpet as it's against favorites.

Re: Euro 2012 Referees
Reffing's been decent in general, after an awful start where the ref ruined first match. Yes there are a few bad decisions (Ukraine non-goal, Karagounis yellow & the failure to give penalties that should have KO'd Germany & Spain) but not too many games where you can say ref made decisions which significantly altered the result.

I noticed this too, there is always going to be mistakes in every tournament but at least the referees aren't trying to take center stage and are letting the football do the talking.

Was the referee specifically from the Ukraine-England game punished, or was it his refereeing team as a whole? From what I remember of the goal it doesn't seem fair to apportion blame to the referee; it was the linesman who messed up a simple offside call, and then the assistant behind the goal who messed up the goal-line issue. In both cases he had to put faith in their decisions.

As far as I know just the referee. I'll check with UEFA on Thursday and let you know then. I'm taking it easy in Hel until then. Lovely beach here, but it was brass monkeys today. One step away from Hel freezing over.

Re: Euro 2012 Referees
UEFA say that after each match the performances of referees and their team were assessed. They have backtracked a bit on the original opinion regarding the Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo and Hungarian Viktor Cassai, saying the assessment is the cause of them not being retained after the group stage. Bjorn Kuipers and Wolgang Stark also went home after group stage. One Dutch assistant referee from Kuipers' team was retained, Sander van Roekel.
You will note that it was not just the Spaniard who was absent from the semis, but German too after assessment.
After group stages, Nicola Rizzoli, Cuneyt Cakir, Pedro Proenca, Craig Thompson, Stephane Lannoy, Damir Skomina , Howard Webb and Jonas Eriksson were retained.
Webb, Cakir, Lannoy and Proenca were kept for semis and Proenca for final. UEFA say that it is all based on assessments and that refs went home rather than being sent home.
