    Scintillating stuff. More please.

It basically means that despite the talk of refereeing standars being high, the performances of at least 4 were considered pretty crap, including Stark and Vellasco. It had previously been said that Kassai and him had been sent home due to poor performance. Kuipers and Stark were thought to be next worse. The fact that Eriksson made it further despite ridiculous booking of Karagounnis questions appraisal. I understand that refereeing performances and their influence on matches doesn't matter to you, so no doubt we can all expect a whinge free season from you on that.

But surely it's always the case that several are going to be judged as the worst performing and allowed to go home - you need less refs as the tournament goes on..

True, but in the case of Kassai and Vellasco, their removal followed a bad performance in just one match. The key point with this is that both Collina, who is part of assessment, and Platini oppose the use of technology, so sending crap referees out early is part of claim that no technology is needed, just sanctions on referees. In one case the team let ref down, but that got Kassai the boot (trusting his team). In the other team got boot for poor decision by ref (Vellasco). Also if system works in sifting out worst, how did Eriksson get away with that appalling card on Karagounis that robbed Greece of their best player for match against Germany?
