Co Adriaanse steps down as a manager of Porto because he had a conflict with the chairman! Probably Adriaanse is gutted because he couldn't get money to buy a decent striker!!!

that's what you get when you contract managers with such a fixed mindset. They think they are more important than the club.

I once bumped into Co when he and the players of Willem II were in "trainingscamp" before one their homegames in the CL : very nice and smart person, to be honest.
He spoke to everybody who had a reasonable question for him, and he debated all points with proper arguements. He impressed me no end.
He *will* become manager of Holland one day, that will be either a total disaster....or the unthinkable might happen...
(I have faith in Co : I hope it will be the latter)

well, he is stubborn, thinks he is more important than the club and that everyone else is really stupid.
But either he has big balls, or he has something hiding in his sleeve. This can't be normal.
It is not normal, because he knew the club's budget for a striker. Portuguese clubs don't buy top Dutch strikers, competing with EPL clubs... Only Porto can do it, but they have to stop doing it quickly.
What isn't normal is also the kind of press talk he has been doing... discusting, actually... he knew this was inevitable, and so looked for no ways to achieve his goal.
He insulted the players, Portuguese and Brazillians, ... once again. After last season I thought he was "trained" to deal with the press and players, but... now he ruined it all.
You can't say your players aren't class enough. That you can train them until a certain level, and from that point is useless because they aren't good enough. You can't say that "Portuguese and Brazillian suck at shooting at goal, they have no goalscoring ability", just to justify you can only have Hesselink and no other. You can't say "I want Adrinano, but the first one. I have the second Adriano and he is not enough".
Excellent technical and tactical coach though...

Well, 2 egos on one club, something had to give
If he his unhappy with the players he has, he choosed or aproved the majority of them, so his bravado is quite silly
And if he his going to spit on the hand that feeds him, well, good ridance
(and i'm not a Porto suporter, by the contrary.....)

Well, today new reports on the issues. After the clash between the president to force him to sign Hesselink for 8 million EUR, and the statements about the squad's (lack of) class, Brazillians and Portuguese players, and individual players...:
- Co was demanding from the players great performances in the friendly games, with attacking football... but forced them to run 10 kms before the game. The squad felt it was unfair his rage against them, when it was his option to work more on the physicall component.
- The last night - the dinner. After a 5-1 win against a Dutch team, Co felt the performance was again poor. And in the hotel, when every players and staff were set to dinner, ... Pedro Emanuel and other player were forbidden to serve themselves in the buffet. Co wanted a new punishment - the players would have to wait sitting that the staff have dinner, and only then be served.
The players waited for the staff to have dinner, and in the end, instead of serving themselves... they left without dinner to the rooms.
Co had an open conflit with the board and the players.
You can always argue in a clash against the board who is right... you can't argue when 30 players are against you. His job is to have the team commited on his side, not to fight them.

Or you hate Co or you love him... there is no other way to think of Co. This is because he is a very black/white thinker...
If he knows he can't deal with a player he loads him off immediately. If he can deal with a player he will make him significantly a better player...!!!!
It has to do with his communist past where everybody is common and rules are rules... His father was a strong believer in communism!!!!!!!
The funny thing is that many Portuguese on here thought (or found) him in the beginning a fascist because of his coaching style and looks....
Well, “radical fascists” and “radical communists” are not that different....
@Doninha
About the press thing, in Holland we also tried to teach him to cope with the press but, just like Louis van Gaal, he will never learn because his ego is too strong...! The press will love him when he has success because his press conferences are always "special" but when he lose he will always make war with the press...
At the new AZ stadium the press room is called the Co Adriaanse lounge...this because of his "unique" relationship with the press...
From now on I will support my old love Sporting again... Last year I hoped Co Adriaanse could make Porto better that's why I hoped them to win a lot but Sporting is a much nicer club IMO....!!!!
Forsa Sporting....

I love Co's style but he's definitely an all or nothing kind of person.
He's an excellent (perhaps even underrated) technical and tactical coach, with bollocks so big he can sit on them and still have enough space left for the bench. He's the complete opposite of Sven and Advocaat.
However, his social skills are... well... err... let's leave it at that.
His interviews are amusing though.
I don't know if anybody else saw the game Porto played against Inter on Dutch tV, but the reporter (Hans Kraaikamp Jr) said that when Co was leaving the pitch after the loss, he was completely emotional, actually crying and saying nobody likes him, that they hate him in the Arena and nobody appreciates him etc. This wasn't filmed or aired then.
I think that everything was unravelling prior to the Amsterdam tournament. The poor performances only tipped him and everybody else over the edge.
I'd love to see him at NEC for one. He'd be the guy that coud take us places. only thing is we're not better than Porto, and if they're not already good enough...

Porto has been really poor this preseason (and that's putting it mildly) and Co felt it slipping away. He resorted to his old tactics (Easter egg hunting, having to walk home after a lost match) which are a make or break mechanism : either the group accepts him as the big leader (dictator is a better word) from which point on there'll be discipline and he *will* get the team to perform...or the team does not accept him (what I expect 9 out of 10 teams will do) and he has forced himself out.
It's a desperate ploy, apparently Co thought it was necessary

Well, Porto has been poor during the games of pre-season, BUT:
- its Co's tactical system;
- Porto got rid of all players he wanted (including the captain Jorge Costa, Postiga after a cost of 5 million, ...);
- Porto hired all the players he wanted (except for one... Hesselink);
- its his tactical system;
- its the players he chosen;
- its his training method (including the intensive physicall work on the day of playing powerfull teams who don't do it);
... to blame the pre-season performance on the players, and go for outdated child punishments...
Porto has now a BIIIIIGG problem, apart of the obvious... their squad is completely molded to Co's tactical system. They don't have the kind of players or even enough players to play with 4 defenders.

Good for Holland as we're in direct battle with Portugal for UEFA-cup tickets....
Still I think there must have been more issues than this to have Co behave this extreme. He's a wacko, but not suicidal...

Co's ego is only 2nd in Portugal to the one of the Porto president. Both won't fit on the same club.
Also, going around badmouthing your own players does not help
The only saving grace for Co was the League and Cup win. Had he not done so, he would have been gone sometime ago
And yes, porto now have a team molded on 3-4-3 system, and no coach to make them play like that....

Micoud is a legend here, a genius, he can not be replaced. But he wanted to move back to France, and since we are grateful for all he has done for us, we let him, although Klaus Allofs tried everything to convince him to stay another year.
Diego is very talented, but he is a different kind of player. That's why we will play (slightly) different as well (still attacking football, of course), but this does not have to be a bad thing. Our game is less predictable without a classical playmaker, we have more tactical flexibility now.
He'll need time to integrate, but I'm sure that he will shine for us. He showed glimpses of his immense talent in the test games prior to the season, and had a very good match against Bayern in the Ligapokal. I expect great things from him.

According to Dutch paper the Telegraaf these were among the reasons why Co resigned :
* His bonus for winning the league is months overdue and still not paid
* Having to sell a good striker and getting no funds to find a replacement
* The Porto president has heavily critised the Porto team after their poor performances at the Amsterdam Tournament
.....maybe in three years time we'll know what really happened

This is absurd:
- the bonus, of course I can't know if its true;
- "sell a good striker" -> he bashed McCarthy on his way out!!! "McCarthy is a nice lad, but he failed to score more than 5 goals". The "funds" are 8 million EUR that he knew he never had budget for it
- the president never criticized the team. Co did it in the press conferences. Its on video!!! Its discusting to see the way he refers to his own players.
