    @ foreigners

    close your eyes for a second and forget about Gerrard, Grosso, Ribery and Huntelaar

    THINK BIGGER

    Cool

    imagine a future where Russian/Iranian and American oil money starts putting Bundesliga clubs on an equal footing with their richer neighbours across the Channel/Rhine/Alps...

    think BRANDS

    which clubs in Germans, with the right money, manager and players could become the biggest Bundesliga brands in the medium-long term ??

    could Berlin leave Bayern behind? they are the German capital, they have the mighty Olympic Stadium...

    do Frankfurt have more potential than Bremen or the other way round ?

    what about Cologne, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Schalke, Dortmund, Leverkusen...?

    ===========

    could you please RANK the Bunesliga clubs (not all 18 needed) according to their INTERNATIONAL BRAND POTENTIAL

    thanks <Ale>

    Everyone outside of Germany knows the name Leverkusen before Hertha Berlin. Ive been to the Berlin Stadium but still recognise Leverkusens red and black strip before the berliners.

    Otto, like I told you in the Bundesliga thread already, the size of the city / population is not the main criteria for the importance of the "brand". Hertha does not have a successful history. Potentially, with proper management and a good concenpt, they could be one of the top Buldesliga "brands", but that requires years of consistent success before they can catch up with the likes of Dortmund, HSV or Werder.

    Hertha has never won the league. After Bayern, Mönchengladbach (all of the titles in the 70s), Werder and Dortmund / HSV are the most successful teams. You need success to become an important brand.

    @ chaps

    this AIN'T WORKING

    all you do is give me a ranking based on the HERE AND NOW

    sure, Hertha BERLIN are NOTHING at the moment

    but use your imagination

    let's say they win the Bundesliga title three times in a row, accompanied by a couple of CL trophies

    all played in front of 76.000 fans in the iconic Olympic Stadium game after game

    there is just no way that Leverkusen could ever compete with that as a BRAND even if they were equally successful

    I guess the question boils down to:

    " Which clubs COULD be best positioned to compete with REAL MADRID as a GLOBAL BRAND?"

    RANK THEM

    =========

    by the way, I am just listening to Bjoerk's "Human"

    that lady is NUTS

    The problem is: Hertha has never won the league, and most definitely will never win it three times in a row. They have 50 million Euros debts, despite being pampered by the state.

    IT WILL NOT HAPPEN.

    Potentially, Dortmund are the biggest club in Germany. They still fill their massive stadium every week (which has a much better atmosphere than the Olympiastadium btw.), with average attendances of 70.000-80.000. They have a successful history, especially in Europe, they are known worldwide. They are in the most football fanatic region of the country, and the most populated / biggest metropolitan area.

    Potentially, Dortmund > *.

    But Dortmund doesn't have the excellent management of Bayern or Werder, that makes the difference, that is the most important aspect, although their current management looks competent.

    @blut

    you are completely avoiding my question

    Which Bundesliga side would be best positioned to challenge REAL MADRID as a GLOBAL BRAND, given money and success was on their side ?

    it's a hypothetical question; they do exist in German/y as well, you know ? Laughing

    even REALOS like yourself are allowed to wonder Cool

    as hypothetical questions go, they are not always rooted in reality at all

    to give you hint: the KAISER himself said that Hertha Berlin had the potential to become bigger than Bayern Munich

    now that we agree on the number one spot, could you please rank the rest for me Whistle

    1. bayern.

    isn't it obvious? 'rekord-meister', have just won in the chl against internazionale, have the prinz and schweini in their ranks and as well as makaay and van bommel.

    2. hsv.

    not just the holland connection, but they had also two of their former cb's in big transfers to bayern and chelsea > big big media exposure.

    making vdv their captain and the purchase of kompany has given hsv more recognition throughout the world and europe in particular.

    The Kaiser talks a lot of shit, nothing new there.

    HERTHA WILL NEVER BE A "GERMAN REAL MADRID"!

    Even a Franco-like dictatorship would not help them.

    End of.

    Werder will establish itself as the 2nd brand of German football in mid-term, that I'm sure of. We'll have an excellent new stadium soon, we are already the 2nd most successful Bundesliga team of the last 30 years, and most importantly, we are the best run club in the league, even HSV tries to copy our winning formula, as Beisersdorfer admitted again today (on DSF).

    Dortmund will be back soon, while Schalke will have massive financial problems soon, unless they somehow manage to qualify for the CL next year.

    the Kaiser never said Berlin would be another Real

    he merely said that Berlin had the potential to become bigger than Bayern

    to me that sounds pretty much like a formality; the stress being on POTENTIAL though, and the road there would obviously be a long one

    blut, you are being stubborn here, now start eating your porridge

    imagine, you are a German billionaire; for whatever reason you hate REAL, MILAN and BARCA and want to create a serious German equivalent in the Bundesliga

    you have time on your side (no rush); you are in it for the long-haul

    any club is up for sale

    who is at the top of your shopping list, who is at the bottom ?

    you cannot seriously tell me that Bremen are the number 2 of a neutral billionaire bent on total football world domination Biggrin

    Bremen would never sell, and I'm glad about that. We have enough plastic clubs in the league already.

    Actually, if that's what you're trying to say here, Hertha would be a good candidate indeed, because of their massive debts. They need every penny they can get. So yes, Hertha, Schalke and Dortmund, due to their financial situation (Dortmund improving though) would be the most realistic choices for a billionaire interested in taking over a club. If I were that billionaire, I'd chose Dortmund, for the reasons explained above.

    But money alone can't buy you success. Back in the 1970s, most clubs were richer than Bayern, still they managed to be the most successful Bundesliga club even back then. And look where they are now.

    maybe you both are right. millions did helped cska moskou in winning russian's first uefa cup trophy with the help of abramovich, and they are indeed from the capitol but money didn't helped that other club from moskou.

    @chrissi

    what would your Bundesliga BRAND-POTENTIAL LIST BE ?

    blut stellt gerade auf Durchzug Very Happy

    @ every1

    you are right about Moscow. Now imagine them winning the CL three times in a row

    they would become a massive BRAND simply because the are the capital's club

    @ blut

    size of population is not the the decider here

    Birmingham are England's second city, yet, as an international brand irrelevant

    Frankfurt maybe have a fourth of the population but are firmly on the map (finance, airport...)

    @bremer

    do you think that the new Weserstadion capacity of 50.000 is large enough to put the club in the frontline of European top-clubs ??

    It will have a capacity of ~56.000 otto. And yes, that will be more than enough to compete on the European level. Difference to many (non German) clubs: We can (and will) fill it every week. We already could sell much more season tickets, if we had the capacity.

    Remember that Werder has a lot of fans in other parts of Germany, most importantly because of the very attractive football we play, which is unique in the Bundesliga.
