Surely there are better defenders around though. I mean if you've got the £5million odd they're likely to ask for (unless he's out-of-contract?) then why not look at someone like Nelsen, Neill or Mellberg? Whether or not they're attainable or not is difficult to say, but - despite my mocking - you're still a bigger club than Blackburn or Villa, even if neither would be looking to sell the player could be interested.
I don't know why, if you've got the money, you don't go in for one of them or someone like Distin or Ben Haim?

I think Ryan Nelson is a pretty good defender , most BB fans had him as their player of year last season.

No offence to Newcastle but Silvestre for a club say 4th - 8th in the table would be excellent playing at centre back or left back.
Its only at the top level does he look out of place.
