Thierry Henry’s programme notes for the CSKA Moscow game have been widely reported in the media this morning. Here, in context, is what the captain actually said.
It was a frustrating day for everyone on Saturday — for me, the team and the fans, but I think what’s important is that we all stick together.
Everton made it difficult for us, which I know is something we have to adapt to, but they had everyone behind the ball. We tried to carry on playing our game, how we did at Reading and how we always do, but on Saturday it didn’t come off. When teams come here they change their formation — that’s a fact — and we know we have to adapt to it.
We had a lack of concentration on the goal we conceded from a corner. Once again, the opposition have one opportunity in the game and they are 1-0 up. And in fact it turned out to be their only opportunity all day.
Everton came with a game plan and scoring early reassured them about what they wanted to do. Tim Cahill had a good game, and they defended well. Let’s try to take the positives though. We kept fighting until the end, and we created chances.
In the second-half we were better and Robin scored a great free-kick. We are sharing the free-kicks, and it’s always better if there are two of us behind the ball, because the ‘keeper doesn’t know who will take it. I put the ball down and Robin stepped up to take it, maybe that created the tiny bit of hesitation we needed.
As I say we improved in the second-half, but I know we didn’t play well enough on Saturday. I know I had an off day myself, but we still could have won the game, we had the opportunities.
And remember, we have taken 16 points from our last six games. Apart from the game in Russia a couple of weeks ago, I think we have been playing well. We don’t have to be worried about our form. There is no need to be on a downer.
There are a couple of things I would like to say from Saturday’s game though. There were times during the match that we could hear the crowd getting frustrated, which I completely understand, but I just feel it would be better if we all stayed together — both when we are winning 4-0, and also when it doesn’t come off.
We were all frustrated on Saturday, and at the end of the game if we haven’t got the result, then fine, groan and complain then — we are all disappointed when we don’t get the result — believe me. But it really doesn’t help groaning at the players when there is still an hour or so to go, far from it actually, it can get on top of you.
I don’t want you the fans to take this the wrong way. We talked about it as a team afterwards and I’m saying it on behalf of the whole team, as captain.
I know that you weren’t booing us on Saturday, I know it wasn’t as bad as that, but I don’t want it to get to the stage where other people think that is what’s happening for two reasons.
Firstly, it provides outsiders with ammunition. You know in some quarters of the media they are making out that you booed me on Saturday which is just not true and I know that you would never do that to me or the team but given the opportunity it is easy for people on the outside to try and wedge a gap between us and we cannot let that happen. We have to stay together.
Secondly, the kind of frustration that was shown on Saturday can lift the teams that come here. When we go away and we hear the opposition fans getting on their team’s back, it gives us a massive lift, so we don’t want that to start happening to us here.
Also on Saturday I saw some fans leave early when we were looking for a goal. We were constantly attacking, looking for the winning goal but some people were leaving early. I just wanted you to know that the players do notice it, so please try and stay until the end. It is a great help to have you there as a twelfth man.
Anyway, I just wanted to raise the point. I don’t want to hide behind it as a reason why we didn’t win on Saturday, because I know I didn’t play well. I was too passive throughout the game. I didn’t take charge of things — I was waiting for things to happen, rather than making them happen.
But I can say that we definitely didn’t have the Moscow game on our minds on Saturday, because when you are chasing a game you have no time to think about anything else.
It is a big game tonight and we want to start well. Over in Moscow we got caught early again, from a free-kick. After that they played really well for about 20 minutes. We woke up in the second-half and played better, but it was a bit too late. Had we started like that, we could have been ahead, and it’s a different story when we are ahead in a match. So we want to start well tonight, and try to get that first goal. Of course you can always win a game right up to the last minute, but sometimes the way you start can set the tone and send a signal to the opposition, that’s what we want to do tonight. We want to be strong at home and let people know it’s difficult to come here.
Finally, I don’t want you to take what I’ve said the wrong way, all I want to say is that we should be together. I love this Club, and I will always do my best for the fans, but that’s a lot easier if we are all together, united as one club, and that of course includes the fans.
