gerrard should start in the middle..lampard on the bench..cole on the left..not very different to the WC team...the system needs changing more than the actual team members..fewer long balls etc which will automatically happen as beckhams gone...
.............robinson
neville...terry..ferdinand...cole
lennon...carrick/hargreaves....cole

subs:
ashton

pennant
lampard
carragher

saw the scholes comments, my point was that for it to even be considered i´m hoping that this shows he recognises the failings of gerrard/lampard together. and venebles defo mentioned the CM as an area McClaren wanted him to think about, i´m sure venebles will have a big input into selection mcclaren is actually quite clever imho and he´d be more than willing to use el tel´s advice otherwise why appoint himparks lives wrote:
He won't be returning Frank.
Venables was very critical of the Gerrard -- Lampard partnership, so hopefully he can have an influence on selection.

Firstly welcome to the board
Secondly, how about this:
.............robinson
neville...terry..ferdinand...cole
------Carrick--Hargreaves----
Gerrard.....Rooney.........Cole
--------------Ashton------------
Then using Lennon as a sub when pace needs to be injected.
We have to decide whether we want to be a team that relies on fast counter-attacking or possession football as this affects the personnel we go with

im no downing fan..
how about this:

pennant......gerrard........lennon
a VERY quick and talented midfield ...if they could actually be taught to keep this shape and keep hold of the ball better than they have done recently this would scare the hell out of opponents...especially with two quick forwards like rooney and owen up-front.
Tweedledum wrote:Has Lennon ever played on the left though?
I'm still insure as to how useful Pennant would be, IMO he would only be worth playing if Ashton plays - if Owen and Rooney are playing there isn't really any point playing someone whose main strength is his crossing.

Agreed owen is better used if you are going to stretch the play with an out and out wide man like pennant (lennon doesn't offer enough end prodcut and cuts in)dont panic! wrote:Tweedledum wrote:Has Lennon ever played on the left though?

dont agree..owen is more than capable of getting on the end of crosses..be it low at the front post or high (see argentina game)

blutgraetsche wrote:The (upcoming) problem I see for England is that Mourinho will probably find a way to play Lampard and Ballack together, and it will probably work well, so people will point at Chelsea and say that Gerrard and Lampard should work for England as well, since Ballack and Lampard are similar type of players also.
Problem is: Ballack may be a similar player, but he is a very intelligent one. He is very versatile, can play well in any midfield position, making it easy to integrate him. That's why I believe that even Ballack and Gerrard would work well also.
For the sake of the English team, I hope those people won't win the argument.
