Wales V Liechtenstein preview Empty Wales V Liechtenstein preview

Post by Luis Tue Nov 14, 2006 4:20 pm

Wales will be seeking a morale-boosting victory when they host European minnows Liechtenstein at The Racecourse Ground on Tuesday, live on Sky Sports 1.

John Toshack's side have lost two of their first three Euro 2008 qualifiers but have four more months to prepare for their next competitive game, against Republic of Ireland, and will view this friendly as the perfect opportunity to find some form.

However, injuries to key defenders James Collins, Gareth Bale and Danny Gabbidon have hit Toshack's plans.

Collins (groin) and Bale (back) have had to pull out of the game after picking up injuries at the weekend, while Gabbidon remains a serious doubt with a back problem.

With Mark Delaney also missing due to knee trouble, Craig Morgan, Lewin Nyatanga, Richard Duffy and Sam Ricketts are set to line up in defence.

Steve Evans of Wrexham is expected to start on the bench but could come on to make his debut on his home ground.

Blackburn's Jason Brown looks set to replace the absent Paul Jones in goal, with Simon Davies, Ryan Giggs, Jason Koumas and Carl Robinson the likely midfield quartet and Craig Bellamy and Robert Earnshaw up front.

Giggs will make his 60th appearance for Wales, but the 32-year-old has played down suggestions he could be a long-term successor to Toshack.

"I still have not thought about what I will do after football, coaching or management hasn't really been considered yet," he insisted.

"I am so concentrated on football and being a good player, I don't think about what will happen.

"You see some players you think are nailed on to be managers, and they don't make it. But then you look at Mark Hughes, outside the game people would not seehim as a manager.

"But he fell into the job as Wales manager and then has gone on to do so well with Blackburn. A lot of it is fate, a lot of players are focused on it and know they will be managers.

"At the moment I am just focused on being a player, nothing else just yet."

Liechtenstein will be playing their first match under new coach Urs Meier, who has been put in temporary charge following Martin Andermatt's defection to Swiss club Young Boys.

Liechtenstein, who have lost their last nine games, have brought an 18-man squad to Wales.

Easily the best in Britain at the moment.

Koumas scored both. Clearly a world class midfielder...

Wales genuinely do play the best football of all the british nations, even if it is one of the least effective. England could learn a thing or two about playing it along the deck from them.

Bellamy got a goal and generally played well. If only he'd play like that against professionals.

Wales win once again by playing the most attractive football of all the home nations.

Shame they can't play the Dutch tomorrow. We're stuck with hoofball instead.

You mean conceding 5 at home against Slovakia constitutes playing the best football? Laughing

Bit like me saying Fulham play better football than Liverpool because they pass it along the deck more (which they probably do)

Liverpool pass it along the deck better than Fulham. We passed our way around arsenal for 40 minutes on Sunday.

Wales are comparable to Fulham though. Shit results but pretty football.

Better than that tripe we'll see from your lot tomorrow...

Gerrard, Rio, Flumps and Carrick all looking for the long ball over the top to Rooney/Johnson. It's sure to be exciting Wink

Most of them do play it along the deck. Gerrard and Rio are the only ones who hit it high more often than not (although that is normally because Crouch is playing).

Ashley Cole tries to hit it into the sky, but sadly doesn't seem able to.

...Flumps is the worst culprit of the long ball Jamie.

Though "long ball" implies theres a target that Flumps is aiming towards Rolling Eyes

Actually "Flumps" tends to come short and then play it simple to the wings.

However, if the wingers are not actually in position (as Gerrard normally isn't), he hits it long (and often fairly accurately) towards the intended target (normally Crouch, who then loses it miserably).

it's a myth.. he has the odd ten minute spell in a game.. that's about it.. but for england he has no shield behind him doing all his work so he'll never be able to reproduce his 'chelsea form' for england.. id be willing to state this as fact Wink
