Makelele was his best mate, during his time at Real, but when he left, he was a bit alone, and then Figo left, and then Cassano came along, they werent best mates, Zidane did have a complaion again. If we still had Makelele im sure Zidane would still be playing.

Who can blame him?
I always thought that about the only player that I would have like to be friends with from the Madrid squad was Solari.. he seemed down to earth, funny and humble.. most of the rest seemed like prats.
Seriousely though, I don't think there is much team spirit in Spanish teams off the pitch (especially in the big ones like Real, Barcelona, Valencia etc) and that is part of the problem.. they are effectively just working.. In FC Barcelona the ones that are friends are the lot from La Masía (plus Saviola) since they grew up together and then you have the Brazilian gang..
At Barca Rijkaard insists on players with a stable married life/girlfriend. So although it may lessen the team's "party" atmosphere, there's still great camaraderie on the pitch and in training, and a group of stable individuals. No more Kluiverts!
