Football's January sales
On 1 January the transfer window opens again for clubs in England.
Whether it is the title-chasers trying to find the missing piece of the silverware jigsaw or the clubs at the bottom bolstering for the relegation run-in, it is the last chance to make major changes.
BBC Sport looks at what each Premiership club needs and who could be on the move during the month of madness.

What they need?

How much have they got to spend?
Arsenal keep their financial cards close to their chest and manager Arsene Wenger has already stressed he will not be buying anyone in January. But last winter he brought in four players, including Theo Walcott and Emmanuel Adebayor, so don't be surprised if they pounce for some fresh faces.

Money is available for manager Sam Allardyce but after spending big for Bolton in the summer he may opt to try to bring some loan signings in.

Former boss Iain Dowie's summer spending spree means there is little left in the Charlton coffers but the club will give Pardew about £3m and ask him to wheel and deal his way to safety.

What they need?
Right-back and potentially a powerful central midfield figure. The striker department will only need strengthening if James Beattie is sold.
What have they got to spend?
Everton chairman Bill Kenwright told the club's AGM that money would be found for manager David Moyes in the January transfer window but big deals will only be done if there is a major outgoing such as Beattie or Simon Davies, who has been linked with Fulham. Moyes is also notoriously reluctant to buy players in January, preferring to wait until the close season.

What they need?
A striker who can finish on a consistent and clinical basis, a winger and a versatile defender.
What have they got to spend?
They could get a cash injection if the takeover by Dubai International Capital takes place before the transfer window shuts. Otherwise, the pot is about £5m to £10m - unless the Reds sell to pad out their limited wallet.
Who have they been linked with?
Peter Crouch being sold to herald the arrival of Valencia striker David Villa is a nice notion but appears unlikely as both teams are still in the Champions League and he may be out of the club's price range. Blackburn right-back/central defender Lucas Neill is the most likely signing.

What they need?

All the talk has been about who will leave City with key trio Micah Richards, Sylvain Distin and Joey Barton all linked to big-money moves away from Eastlands. Boss Stuart Pearce has no financial need to sell but with ongoing takeover talks yet to be concluded he has little cash to bring in reinforcements either - but a striker is top of his list.

Money has rarely been a problem for Boro, even if chairman Steve Gibson has reined in the spending in recent years. The biggest problem has been attracting the sort of quality the team requires. A permanent move for Jonathan Woodgate, who is on loan from Real Madrid, is also high on the list.

What they need?
Right-back, left-back, centre-back, striker. Judging by the injury crisis, maybe an entire new squad.

Tough to tell. Figures of £12m have been bandied about for Peter Crouch, so that suggests the club have money to burn, although fans will be hoping the spending is sensible. Manager Glenn Roeder seems to be favouring players from the lower leagues, with Southampton's Gareth Bale and Derby's Giles Barnes mentioned by him recently.

Almost certainly more than the others in the drop zone, thanks to new Icelandic chairman Eggert Magnusson and his wealthy backer Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson. "He will get the money he needs," said Magnusson of Alan Curbishley upon his appointment as manager on 13 December.

What they need?
Strength in depth, otherwise injuries and suspensions will continue to cost them. Maybe a striker as the top scorer only has six.

Difficult to say. Spent £13m on Heskey, Landzaat, Boyce, Kilbane and Cotterill in the summer but chairman Dave Whelan may be persuaded to dip into his personal fortune once again to avoid a potentially-disastrous relegation battle. To be fair to Whelan, they entered the Scandinavian market to get Kristofer Haestad and Andreas Granqvist before the transfer window had even opened.
