Lazio Vs Roma match discussion! Empty Lazio Vs Roma match discussion!

Post by Luis Thu Dec 07, 2006 5:09 pm

Rome will be brought to a standstill this weekend for the season’s first Derby della Capitale at the Stadio Olimpico.

While the Giallorossi have stolen much of the media spotlight with their impressive start, their neighbours have quietly climbed into seventh spot. Delio Rossi’s side were edged out by Fiorentina last weekend to break a run of three consecutive wins.

However, the 56-year-old tactician will have taken heart from the Biancocelesti’s performances to date and – given the reduction of the Calciopoli deduction to only three points – will now set his sights on a UEFA Cup berth. With Paolo Di Canio gone, the pressure is on the Lazio players to show the kind of passion that the great man used to bring to a Roman derby in the biggest test of the season so far.

Inter may be clear favourites to claim the Scudetto, but Roma will chase them to the bitter end. Luciano Spalletti has instilled a great fighting spirit in his side and it was aptly demonstrated last weekend against Atalanta. The Lupi fought back from a goal down to claim a sixth consecutive victory and keep Inter’s lead to four points.

There’s no secret to Roma’s success - they have been prolific in front of goal and are Serie A’s top scorers with 32 goals. Spalletti can also be proud of their disciplinary record – only Roma and Torino are yet to have a player dismissed this term.

Club officials on both sides will be nervously watching events unfold on and off the field. With so much tension in the Olimpico and a history of clashes between fans, they can only hope there are no violent scenes in the stands.

Rossi will be boosted by Stefano Mauri’s timely return from suspension, but Pasquale Foggia is a doubt after picking up an ankle knock last weekend. Swiss star Valon Behrami is back in training but will probably continue to wait for his first action of the season as he’s lacking match fitness.

Spalletti’s squad is blighted by knee injuries. Gilberto Martinez, Matteo Ferrari and Alberto Aquilani miss out. Young French midfielder Ricardo Faty is sidelined for another three weeks. Francesco Totti hurt his ankle last Saturday and was rested for the Valencia game in midweek, but will surely play as a lone striker.

Man on fire: Francesco Totti (Roma) – Er Pupone is now equal Capocannoniere with nine goals after spectacularly overcoming a penalty curse with two spot-kicks last weekend. He’s always a talismanic figure, especially in a Rome derby.

    Last season: Lazio 0-2 Roma

    Form guide: Lazio (D W W W L) Roma (W W W W W)

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lazio (probable): Peruzzi; Oddo, Siviglia, Cribari, Zauri; Mudingayi, Ledesma, Mutarelli, Mauri; Rocchi, Pandev

Roma (probable): Doni; Panucci, Mexes, Chivu, Tonetto; De Rossi, Pizarro, Taddei, Perrotta, Mancini; Totti

    my precition: Lazio 1-3 Roma

Roma goalkeeper Alexander Doni is optimistic ahead of Sunday’s big match with Lazio. “We will win this derby,” he declared.

The Brazilian made his Giallorossi debut in a Rome derby in October 2005, which ended with a 1-1 draw, and is aware of the special atmosphere surrounding this match.

“I remember last year when we were held to a draw, but I have pleasant memories of that game as I offered a good performance,” said Doni on Thursday.

“It was exciting to debut on such a special occasion, but I am sure we can do better this year. I believe we can win,” added the 27-year-old.

“The derby is even more important than a Champions League Final, that is why we are focusing on Sunday and so are our supporters.

“It is nice to feel that our fans are so close to us, this is thanks to the fact that Roma are playing excellent football. Inter are ahead of us and that is a fact, but I believe we can catch them,” explained Doni.

In a recent interview discussing the upcoming Derby della Capitale, Roma midfielder Simone Perrotta likened Doni to Lazio and Italy ‘keeper Angelo Peruzzi.

“Peruzzi is one of the best players in Serie A and I admired him even when I was in Brazil. I am working hard because I would like to be called up for my national team, although I know there are many strong goalkeepers who hope the same.”

Doni has become the butt of a number of training ground jokes recently after he had some problems pronouncing the word ‘taxi’ in an advertisement filmed by Roma.

“It’s true, I had a hard time. But I can say the word Scudetto perfectly,” he added smiling. “We just need to remain calm and not exalt ourselves too much,” concluded the Giallorosso.

Massimo Oddo may be a Laziale, but he hopes Francesco Totti will take part in tonight’s Rome derby for the Giallorossi.

“I hope that Totti is able to play. After all, the victory would taste so much sweeter against a full-strength Roma side. This way they’d have no excuses,” smiled the defender.

Totti is a major doubt for the Stadio Olimpico showdown due to an ankle injury. It’s not the first time Oddo has commented on his fellow World Cup winner, though, as he famously said there was a “lack of respect” in the Giallorossi star’s decision to take a hiatus from Azzurri duty.

“What I said about his absence from the Nazionale was blown out of proportion. Mine was not an insult and Francesco understood that. In any case, we have already cleared the situation up between ourselves and there are no problems,” he assured.

“In order to win, we must be humble. We’re aware that we are a strong side, but have to focus on the collective without getting into a panic to score. We know Roma’s characteristics, as they have excellent players in all areas.”

The right-back, a known Milan transfer target, could leave Lazio in January and there were rumours his substitution in last week’s 1-0 defeat at Fiorentina was punishment for contract renegotiations going awry.

“Nothing happened, it was all stirred up by the media. The Coach can make his decisions. I am a professional and must accept them. Of course I was disappointed, but that doesn’t mean anything. My next derby will again be in Rome. This is my desire, to stay here, but the decision isn’t entirely up to me.”

Stefano Mauri returns from suspension and with him the 4-3-3 system for the Biancocelesti.

    Pandev - Mauri - Makinwa - Rocchi - Foggia - Behrami (injured)

If at least 4 of them start tonight, Lazio can give Roma an ass-whipping! Lazio has a great team for the future.

And then there is Oddo.... And no Twatti Wink
