Re: Ashley Young
Worth a big fee, but he's English, so that adds maybe 30% to the amount because it sells more papers and keeps alive the merry go round about England being a world class footballing nation.

English Championship clubs are overpriced. English players however generally aren't providing you use some common sense and wait.

Since then a certain player from Crystal Palace went to Everton for an inflated fee and now every other Championship club with a decent player on a long term contract would be mad to sell for those prices.

Re: Ashley Young
Selling Young is the ABSOLUTELY RIGHT THING TO DO
and they will sell him because Boothroyd knows that:
A) Young is not worth 10m - its a fantastic deal for Watford
B) That relegation is utterly unavoidable
The money is far more valuable to the club than one very good player. When Watford go down they will need all the money they can get to stabilise as a top half of the table championship club. Im not saying that Watford will go into freefall following relegation, but theres little to stop them joining teams such as Leicester/Norwich/Coventry/Sheff Wed. and just becoming a low-mid-table team despite their previous premiership experience.
Boothroyd has worked out that this current crop of Watford players will not only get relegated but also wont stand a chance of going back up, however, with 10 million and some wise spending, they could have every chance of bobbing up again like a cork.

Re: Ashley Young
Very True Ras-9, but who's going to be stupid enough to buy the bait?
Spurs for example, aren't Intrested anymore, not when Watford started talking about £6m+. Young seems a smart lad and seems to be aware of this himself, which is probably why he turned down the bigger salary at West Ham.

Re: Ashley Young
Hes a good player but £9m+ is far too much, it'll add too much pressure on the boy. He was class in the championship, easily Watfords best attacking player, I even put him in my fantasy premiership team, I had high hopes
Hope he at least goes to a club that'll give him a chance of regular first team action but IMO te fee should be roughly £5m

Re: Ashley Young
People are being a bit naive and saying "what's he done?" when the £10m price tag is about "what does he have the ability to do?"
He has the ability to play for the big 4 and make an England place (prob left midfield) his own for years to come.
He has a great touch, a very good shot, great passing and crossing ability (assist of the season for Marlon v Fulham) and is a very good set piece taker.
Add exceptional pace and the versatility to play right mid, left mid, attacking mid, wing forward or second striker and you have £10m.
No one would scoff if Lennon was transferred for £10m yet:
Dribbling: Lennon > Young
Pace: even
Crossing: Young > Lennon
Passing: Young > Lennon
Shooting: Young > Lennon
versatility: Young > Lennon
Has a great attitude too - he will go right to the top.
I'd love to see Rooney play for a shit team like ours and get his end product.

Yep, Young's really struggling in that department.
Further to my earlier comment - old fashoined wingers like Lennon who go round the outside of the full back to the by line will become a thing of the past.
Wingers like Ronaldo and Young who start in a wide position but come inside to make things happen are the future.
The media will go crazy over people like Rooney and Lennon who will beat 3 people before dissappearing up their own anus but a player like Young who can not be in the game yet suddenly pop up with a goal or an assist is overpriced at £10m

Re: Ashley Young
from the daily mail:
Prices go mad as Villa pay almost £10m for Watford rookie Young
Ashley Young agreed to leave Watford for Aston Villa for £9.65million last night as inflation continued to run riot during the transfer window.
Young, 21, has scored four goals in his first season in the Premiership after being with with Watford since he was 10.
The England Under 21 international, who can play up front or in midfield, found several Premiership clubs scrapping for his services after making an impressive start to the campaign.
They were all willing to pay over the odds because of the new multimillion pound Premiership TV deal, which kicks in next season and makes relegation this year more costly than ever before.
Young was interested in a move to Tottenham, but manager Martin Jol’s offer of cash plus Calum Davenport was rejected by Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd.
West Ham manager Alan Curbishley’s bid of £9.65m for Young was accepted this week but the player rejected the move to Upton Park because he did not want to swap one relegation fight for another.
Villa moved in by promising a down-payment of £8m and up to £1.65m in add-ons, depending on Young’s success. They are only seven points above West Ham, who occupy the final relegation spot, but, with American billionaire Randy Lerner now in control, the club have the financial muscle to pull off transfers that have proved beyond them in recent years.
Villa slipped into the red following a catalogue of disastrous transfer market raids but now their potential outlay on Young will surpass the £9.5m shelled out by John Gregory six years ago when he signed Juan Pablo Angel from Argentinian side River Plate.
The signing is a coup for Villa boss Martin O’Neill, who was becoming desperate after his previous attempts this month came to nothing. He had lined up Liverpool’s Craig Bellamy and Jermain Defoe from Tottenham in the weeks leading up to the opening of the window.
But Bellamy decided the possibility of playing against Barcelona in the Champions League was too tempting and said no to O’Neill, while Jol withdrew Defoe from the transfer market.
great news*. obviously he's overpriced, but hopefully will prove to be worth it long term. just hope it doesn't put too much pressure/expectation on him.
*assuming it is true, of course. official site says we've agreed a fee, but not whether he's agreed terms

well it's £14m going up to £17/18m with add ons, but i know what you're saying. thing is though, if they both become integral parts of the team for the next 5 years or so, it'll be well worth it. it is a risk, but so it goes.
can't be worse than £6m for balaban and £7m for collymore etc. etc.

Re: Ashley Young
Of course better than those buys, Still Villa have a small squad, and hes spent at least 15 mill on two players. In the long run maybe when he signs a few more, things might look better, But a bit risky considering Villa's position.

He is slightly over priced, however Villa are going to get an excellent young player and if he does move on in 3-4 years will get most of there fee back as well.
Its just as much an investment really.

i think we may go back to how o'neill was playing at the start of the season 4-3-3/4-5-1, with young, moore and gabby alternating for the wide roles.Tweedle wrote:Jesus wept!

being linked with tainio as well today. so maybe
-----tainio/davis-mccann-petrov-----
gabby/young------------young/moore
----------------baros--------------------
lots of pace, but i'm not sure that role suits baros

That looks good especially as Young can happlily swap wings.
the money should help Watford as well as long as they spend the money sensibly.
Tainio is another good player, in effect if you get him you'll play:
-------------McCann---------------
-------Tainio-----------------------
------------------Petrov-----Young
------Agbonlhor--------------------
-------------New striker?----------

yeah i think that could be a good team. might have to wait till summer for a new striker, unless baros goes.
add a defence of
---------------sorensen--------------
bardsley--laursen--mellberg--barry
and i think we could have a decent run in to the season
