Bye bye Baros, Hello Carew? Empty Bye bye Baros, Hello Carew?

Post by debaser Mon Jan 22, 2007 4:32 pm

LYON, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Czech striker Milan Baros has joined Olympique Lyon from Aston Villa in exchange for Norway striker John Carew, the Ligue 1 team's coach Gerard Houllier announced on Monday.

The 25-year-old Baros used to play for Houllier when the Lyon coach was in charge at Liverpool. The Czech was still playing for the Premier League side when he turned down an offer to join Lyon in 2005.

still no confirmation from villa, and i don't know if it includes cash or is a straight swap, but probably will be a good deal imo. baros has never really hit it off at villa. carew as the big point man with young/moore/gabby playing off him could be very effective

    Tosser.

They offered us more than Villa last summer and he desperately wanted to move there. Now things go tits up for him and he wants to move to Lyon Erm

    Great buy though.

Let me just say this about Carew: He CAN be excellent one game every twenty. The rest of the time he will be a useless piece of shit.

Carew is a great signing for villa. Suits O'Neil perfectly. A much better version of the past it Sutton.

O'Neill likes to play a crude long ball game so Carew should fit in perfectly.

Ah well, at least Cannavaro doesn't have to worry about comeing across Carew for a while Smiley

Seems a good move for Baros, he can re-vitalise his career at Club level & he & Fred look like a very balanced front 2.

Only thing about Baros is he can't really play on his own down the middle so may be competing for a position with Govou.

Can't see Baros as a RWF.

Baros will enjoy playing for Lyon and will probably do very well for them. Carew will provide Villa with a reason to stop trying to use Angel as a targetman.

Gabby's better off trying out for the 4 x 100m GB Relay team. Look up "Pace-merchant" in the Dictionary and you'll find his picture. (after Henry & SWP of course Wink)

All pace, very little control, just has a few scrappy goals - though the finish on sat was very composed. Not in Routledge's class. ok

agreed. angel's villa days are numbered. i think sutton may even be ahead of him in o'neill's eyes

Angel's a decent player, but he's not really a targetman, not really a linking forward, not really a poacher. He's somewhere in between, and I think that O'Neill likes specific players for certain roles.

Angel will probably be sold to some mid-table Spanish side. Or maybe Al-Ittihad.

his goalscoring record at reserve/youth level was incredible and i think he could score quite a few if played up front alongside someone like carew - instead he's been stuck out wide and maybe got 15 mins up front at the end of the match alongside angel/baros. he is not a winger - he's only played on the right this season because we have had no-one else, so comparing him to routledge or lennon isn't really fair.

besides, moore will probably be ahead of him in the pecking order once he's fit. young-carew-moore looks very nice to me.

yep. the other thing is he's completely lost his pace - not that it was ever his main attribute, but now he is positively sluggish, and can't get to the positions he used to be able to.

That's looking much more like it then, in terms of a group of forwards. I've always liked Moore. Wasn't he the man who won The Sun's award last season for being the first player to score against Chelsea?

So is that it now, or will another striker come in, as I know you mentioned you wouldn't mind a striker before the swop.

i think if we sign anyone else it'll be cover/alternative to mccann, because that's the only position where we haven't really got any specific cover.

not that i'd mind another striker, but i think the additional options with having carew and young will be enough - at least for the rest of this season, sutton and angel will go in the summer and i'd expect someone else in then.

    So still 4-3-3?

    --------------- Sorenson

    Bardsley -- Mellberg -- Cahill -- Bouma

    ------ Petrov -- McCann -- Davis

    --- Gabby -------------------- Young

    ---------------- Carew

    At least until Moore returns.

Although watching your highlights on MotD Berger played a couple of classy passes.

yeah that looks about right, except for the barry omission obviously. laursen and moore for cahill and gabby when fit

i heard berger was quite good. thought we'd seen the last of him - he's another option if he stays & stay injury free
