Obi and I were chatting in the Liverpool thread and it sparked an idea... how does your team compare to 10 years ago?

    For Liverpool:

    1997

    -----------------James
    MacAteer--Ruddock--Babb--Bjornebye
    McManaman--Redknapp/Thomas--Ince--Barnes
    ------------Collymore--Fowler

    2007

    ----------------Reina
    Finnan--Carragher--Agger--Riise
    Gerrard--Sissoko---Alonso--Garcia/Kewell
    ----------Kuyt----Bellamy/Crouch

We look better everywhere apart from the forward line to me, man-for-man and as a team. Barnes by 1997 was a spent force and Garcia would shade it for me over Berger. But Colly/Fowler was imo on a par with Shearer/Sutton, Shearer/Ferdinand, Wright/Bergkamp and Cole/Yorke as one of the great Premiership striker pairings.

Only McManaman and Fowler would definitely get into the current side IMHO. You could make a case for Redknapp, were he not competing against Xabi.

Christ that '97 back 5 sends a cold shudder through me.

    1997

    ------------- Schmeichel

    Neville ---- Pallister -- Johnsen ---- Irwin

    Beckham -- Butt/Scholes -- Keane -- Giggs

    ----------- Cantona -- Cole

    2007

    ------------- Van Der Sar

    Neville --- Ferdinand --- Vidic ---- Evra

    Ronaldo --- Scholes --- Carrick --- Giggs

    ----------- Rooney ---- Saha

I think it's pretty level to be honest.

The 2007 may have the edge with the better defensive unit but that 1997 was arguably just as good going forward if not better.

    West Ham 1997

    Miklsoko
    Breacker---Ferdinand---Rieper---Dicks
    Rowland---Bishop---Moncur---Hughes
    Hartson--Kitson

    West Ham 2007

    Green
    Neill---Ferdinand---Gabbidon---Konchesky
    Benayoun---Mullins---Reo-Coker---Boa Morte
    Ashton---Tevez

for me...Miklosko,Rieper and Dicks at their peaks like then would all be infront of Green,Ferdinand and Konchesky

otherwise the 2007 is much better...had it been the West Ham squad of 1999...that would be an interesting one!

Oh as for who would get in our team from the '97 crop - Schmiechel, Keane, Giggs and one of Cantona or Cole.

I think Scholes and Neville have got better with age.

Colly in 1997 was a beast and would cut it against any striker in the Prem today. He went downhill very fast, admittedly.

Kuyt is less of a perv though Razz

    - - - - - - - - - - Reina
    Finnan - Carragher - Agger - Riise
    McManaman - Gerrard - Alonso - Garcia
    - - - - - - - - Kuyt - Fowler

... I quite like that. Garcia and McManaman could easily swap wings aswell.

Firstly I think the league is without doubt a lot stronger than it was ten years ago. Its a hell of a lot stronger in fact.

    Regarding Arsenal:

    Cesc wrote:Arsenal 1996/1997 team

    ----- Platt -- Vieira -- Merson -- Helder

    ------------ Henry -- van Persie

Reserves: Ljungberg, Baptista, Senderos, Flamini, Djourou, Adebayor, Walcott, Almunia

A combined team for me would be:

    -------------Seaman-------------

    Eboue--Adams---Gallas--Winterburn

    Hleb-----Vieira----Cesc---Rosicky

    ---------Henry--Bergkamp-------

Both forward lines are damn good and any player could have made it IMO.

The midfield was also difficult and again all four could have a claim for a position

    Badly. Laughing

    1996/97

    --------------Srnicek--------------
    Watson--Albert--Peacock--Elliot
    -----------------Lee---------------
    Gillespie--------------------Ginola
    -------Beardsley/Asprilla--------
    -------Shearer--Ferdinand-------

Reserves: Hislop, Barton, Beresford, Batty, Clark, Beardsley/Asprilla

    2006/07

    ----------------Given----------------
    Solano--Taylor--Moore--Babayaro
    Milner--Parker--Dyer--N'Zogbia
    -------Martins--Owen/Ameobi-------

Reserves: Harper, Bramble, Ramage, Butt, Emre, Duff, Sibierski

Obviously Given is alot better than Srnicek, but apart from that the 96 team is stronger, although CM is close.

    Sporting 1996/97:

    De Wilde

Saber - Beto - Marco Aurélio - Vujacic

Hadji - Pedro Martins - Oceano - Pedro Barbosa

    Sá Pinto - Amunike

    ______________

Subs: Tiago, Gil Baiano, Luis Miguel, Peixe, Vidigal, Pedrosa, Afonso Martins, Dominguez, Iordanov, Simão, Paulo Alves, Ouattara, Missé-Missé

it was a very strange year, because we played most of the games with no strikers. That year we sold Amunike and promoted Simão.

    This yeear:

    Ricardo

    Caneira - Polga - Tonel - Tello

    Moutinho - Custódio - C. Martins - Nani

    Liedson - Alecsandro

Subs: Tiago, Abel, Ronny, M. Veloso, Paredes, Bueno, Djaló, Farnerud, Pereirinha

I think we're much better in terms of young talents, and a much solid defence. BUT we have only 1 good attacking option.

Pallister was more consistent and as good a Rio. He would surely crack it in this team, he can defend for 90+ minutes.

    FC Porto 1996/97:

    Artur / Jardel

    Drulovic / Zahovic / Edmilson

    Barroso

Paulinho Santos / Aloísio / Jorge Costa / Sérgio Conceição

    Hilário

    FC Porto 2006/2007:

Lisandro Lopez / Helder Postiga / Ricardo Quaresma

    Lucho Gonzalez / Raul Meireles

    Paulo Assunção

Fucile / Pepe / Bruno Alves / Bosingwa

    Helton

    2006/2007:
Worst attack (Jardel is the best ever striker at Porto for me)
Worst attacking midefield (Drulovic and Zahovic at their prime were super)
Better defending midfield (Barroso was much worse, only good at free kicks)
Worst defense, though Pepe is very good too.
Better keeper (Chelsea supporters might find the old one familiar Laughing )
