Andrei Kanchelskis has retired from professional football at the age of 38 after being released by Russian club Samara.
The flying winger is best known for a successful spell at Manchester United in the early 1990s, while he also played for Everton, Fiorentina, Rangers, Manchester City and Southampton.
"You need to leave at the right time," he told Sport Express.
"Now seems a suitable moment to begin a new chapter in my footballing life."
The pacy winger arrived at Old Trafford from Shakhtar Donetsk in 1991, and after a slow start established himself as one of the team's most potent attackers.
Kanchelskis formed a key part of the fabled 1993/94 double-winning side, but was sold to Everton in 1995 as Alex Ferguson sought to make room for David Beckham.
Although he never recaptured the form he showed at United, his extravagant skills and searing pace made him a fans' favourite at virtually all of his clubs.
