Best manager never to win the EC/CL

Wenger says plenty of managers who won the CL should not be considered 'great' managers.

On the other hand - who in your opinion is the greatest manager never to win the top club competition?

If we're talking about the European Cup in general then anyone who overlooks Shankly is just plain wrong. There's a distinct difference between the tournament then and the tournament now though. In the last 25 years every world class coach has won it. Bar none.

Luciano Spalletti hasn't won it yet, and IMO he is one of the best coaches in Europe. Along with Prandelli, who I think hasn't had a crack at the CL yet.

Among the Italian coaches, Sacchi won it twice in the last 25 years. Lippi made 4 finals, but won it only once.

Nah, twice - 2000 and 2002. He wasn't there when they won it in 1998.

Well, Lippi did make 4 finals in the last 10 years (where he coached a club in the CL only 7 times!!)... thats not too bad a record!

I would say Co Adriaanse, great entertaining coach but still pretty underrated I think.

Yes, although no other manager has had so long to shape a club his way as Fergie. And apart from 1999, his best other showing is one semi-final appearance isn't it?

Two semi finals.

Del Bosque achieved more than Ferguson in less than three years.

Wenger's never going to be a Benitez, neither is Ferguson for that matter so they are always going to struggle to win in Europe with poorer players. What separates Wenger from Ferguson in Europe and now in the premier league is that his one dimensional tactic realistically simply isn't good enough to win in Europe even on one occasion.

the final was anything but dour until Lehmann was sent off and even then, as finals go it was pretty good
