... on football focus yday.
Did any Sporting Lisbon supporters see it?
It was about 15minutes long, but was rather insightful- comparing the Sporting Lisbon Academic strategy of total focus on player technique with the English academy system, most notably Man City (which has produced the likes of SWP, Barton and Richards) and Spurs (which has essentially began copying the Sporting Lisbon strategy).
The one thing I found extremely strange is they didnt mention Quaresma when listing off past successes from the SL academy. That one is sure to bite them in the ass when he becomes a major star (anyone who has seen him play knows he has a bright future)
The general feeling seemed to be that in Portugal the kids are given more time to practics on the ball, whereas in England more focus is on tactics and athletic fitnes. More games in England also meant that less training during the week on the ball is possible.
The first side in the English league to have brought in a specific technique and skills trainer to their academy to increase the technical aspect of the kids, and whose academy is now run by a Portuguese who worked for Sporting Lisbon- Tottenham Hotspur.
Is it any suprise then that second best winger in the EPL after Ronaldo plays for Spurs?
More proof, if it were needed, why Spurs >>>> Newcastle
