The BBC's piece on the Sporting Lisbon Academy Empty The BBC's piece on the Sporting Lisbon Academy

Post by Isco Benny Sun Mar 04, 2007 10:50 am

    ... on football focus yday.

Did any Sporting Lisbon supporters see it?

It was about 15minutes long, but was rather insightful- comparing the Sporting Lisbon Academic strategy of total focus on player technique with the English academy system, most notably Man City (which has produced the likes of SWP, Barton and Richards) and Spurs (which has essentially began copying the Sporting Lisbon strategy).

The one thing I found extremely strange is they didnt mention Quaresma when listing off past successes from the SL academy. That one is sure to bite them in the ass when he becomes a major star (anyone who has seen him play knows he has a bright future)

The general feeling seemed to be that in Portugal the kids are given more time to practics on the ball, whereas in England more focus is on tactics and athletic fitnes. More games in England also meant that less training during the week on the ball is possible.

The first side in the English league to have brought in a specific technique and skills trainer to their academy to increase the technical aspect of the kids, and whose academy is now run by a Portuguese who worked for Sporting Lisbon- Tottenham Hotspur.

Is it any suprise then that second best winger in the EPL after Ronaldo plays for Spurs? Cool

More proof, if it were needed, why Spurs >>>> Newcastle <Ale>

I saw it, one of the kids did say that they aspire to playing like Ronaldo and Quaresma.

Yeah he did, but why did the BBC only list Figo and Ronaldo?

dumbing down for the mass audience. No wonder the majority of supporters in this country are pig ignorant- there was the opportunity for the BBC to educate, but it was passed upon

The BBC insulting the viewer's intelligence - Well I never!!!

They missed out Simao and Hugo Viana as well. Players the majority of football should know as one has played against England twice in the last few years and the other because he was a £10 million player in England at one point.

Man Utd have a link with Sporting, so I imagine they have knowledge on their special training regimes.

Malbranque is goood, but he's not that good.

Newcastle U18's are in the FA Youth Cup semi's for the 2nd year in a row and have a number of good players coming through. We have the better academy. And i saw a piece on the regional news recently about Newcastles academy(only set up during Robsons reign) and Beardsley, Roeder and co were saying that they mainly concentrate on technique and skill - So Tottenham certainly aren't unique in that respect.

This season we have played with a backline full of academy players, and we beat Liverpool with a team containing 7 Englishmen.

More proof, if it were needed, that Newcastle >>>> Spurs <Ale>

Failing to mention Quaresma (and to lesser extent Simao) was a HUGE blunder on part of the BBC. I couldn't take the piece seriously after that.
It stuck out like a sore.

Everyone knows that Southampton have the best academy in the country. It's alright, you can admit it. There's no shame in it.

    Hi guys,

I know about the piece, as it was reported in our media, but I haven't seen it. I know they interviewed Moutinho and other (still) unknown kids.

The main difference, even in Portugal, is that Sporting doesn't take in count the physicall ability of the kids during the selection and for many years.

Benfica usually had big kids playing, that most of the times gave them victories in youth champioships. If they fail to develop physical ability... they fail (and they are many) to have a successfull career. Even in Sporting, only 50% of the kids get to be professional in 1st division.

Any link on the BBC video?

I remember when Figo started his career at Sporting, they used to say he was too small. They really pushed him to put on weight.

The lack of mention of Quaresma is a crime. Rest of it I thought was quite informative.

    Nani certainly is quality.

Will surely earn a big money move soon. As will Queresma.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the real deal out of the three though.
