Retire the XIV

Many shirt numbers in the world of Football have been laid to rest in the process of retiring them, i.e. Franco Baresi no6 at Milan.

There is a consensus between many Ajax fans that the legendary no14 worn famously worn by Johan Cruijff should be laid to rest (be retired) this year being the 60th birthday of the great man, would be a nice tribute. 14 being a squad number and not a traditional number for a player (1-11 being) would not cause much difficulty. I'm sure it will be up to the current board.

Should this be the case?

Good idea, but will never make up for the raised middlefinger Ajax showed Cruyff in 1983.

This is the only worry i have .. Cruijff twice left Ajax in a cloud of 'smoke' and anger (1974 + 83) .. this should not overlook his commitment/achievement for the club.

do you mean number 14 for all clubs or just Ajax?

I see no problem in Ajax doing it - lots of clubs do

I'm not a fan of it, in general, because it makes one player seem above or greater than the club. I'm glad Real Madrid don't do it but if Ajax want to do it, then it makes sense to do it for Cruyff.

We've had many class players at the club, and deciding who is a legend or not...

Anyways there is a rule in the liga about only having squad no's from 1-35(?) except for players promoted from within.

Class players: Pedja, Sanchez, Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo, Di Stefano, Ramon Garcia etc etc...

We would have no numbers left :win:
