Köln was heavily bombed in WW2, that's why. It used to be a nice city, it's one of the oldest German cities, almost 2000 years old.

Germans love the English accent actually. And especially Hamburg is a very cosmopolitan city, so you should be safe even without your Germany shirt.

Hamburg is a great and quite beautiful city, it has the Reeperbahn, a lot of great clubs and bars, a lot of beautiful women. But the people are cold and arrogant, that's just a fact. Not all of them, of course, but more than anywhere else in this country. Still worth a visit.

Visit München in the summer or autumn, for the Biergarten atmosphere and Oktoberfest alone it's worth a visit. The cleanest, and one of the most beautiful German cities. If you love beer, you'll adore München (a lot of pubs make their own beer, and it tastes great).

In Bavaria, it's pretty easy. Just talk to them with your English accent, be friendly, and you are set.

It's definitely not modern. Actually, it's a pretty awful name.

Düsseldorf is a "posh" city, a rich city, famous for designer clothes and expensive boutiques. The city itself is actually ok, but if you find the time, make sure you visit Köln also.

Probably one of the smaller cities in the Ruhrgebiet, the industrial cities. Middlesbrough has a population of 150,000, so Mülheim an der Ruhr (170,000) would be a good example.
