The rabona for a bad player might be a useless trick, like stepovers also for the untalented. For a skillfull and talented player, its helpfull, as the defenders usually don't prepare themselves for that pass / trick, as it is unexpected..
The tricks are very underrated by most fans. Sometimes it is just show boat, but for a true great talent, it is a true weapon. Not only the trick itself, but because it enlarges the number of options the defender has to worry about.
The 'trivela' (side foot kick, pass or cross) for many is taken as a useless trick, as you could do the shot, cross or pass with the normal part of the foot. If you are defending a player like Quaresma, the master of 'trivela' , if you defend him in a regular way when he is on the left side of the pitch, you're expecting him to cross with the left foot (weaker), or having to prepare the right foot cross (turn 90 or 180º, having to use time), so you prepare how to defend that play. With the trivela he has the chance to cross or shoot with no opposition. Or if the defender is alerted to that, he is more unbalaced for a dribble, changing speed, and so on.

The keyword is the more (quality) options you have as an attacker, the worst the defender can act.
