Messi recuerda al mejor Maradona y encarrila la eliminatoria.

The headline from Marca. Hype or was it that good? Always hard to define a goal as good as Maradona's. There have been a few that match it but what puts his miles above the rest is the stage on which it scores. Looks like we will hear about this goal all week though. When was the last time Barca made a copa final? Ages?

I didn't intend to have one there...though Messi's goal was amazing, goal of the season and decade and what-not, I felt as a whole Xavi and Iniesta were more involved in the match.

But then again, I was busy with other things while watching it so maybe I'm overestimating their work.

I'd been having a good day, and this match and Messi's goal just made it better.

I too don't rate it quite as much as Maradona's, because he was up against better defenders.

But I think this one will be in my top 5 of all time.

Wow? That is a statement and a half! It must have been special! Am looking forward to seeing it. At least it seems not to be overated like the Ronaldinho vs Villarreal earlier in the season. "The best goal of all time" .

Sounds like Messi's goal was phenomenal, does anyone have any links to it, as I cant wait to see it. . The Argie kid seems to be going places, so we will swap Richardson for him.

I am happy Messi is fit and playing, he has scored quite alot of goals since his injury if I remember correctly. I have loved watching him play since the world youth games, you guys are so fortunate to have him. Hopefuly next season we will play you guys in the CL, so I can watch him play.

What a goal, I can see the comparissons with Maradonna as both goals were very similar. Maradonnas was much better as it was in the world cup quarter finals against better players. If he scored that agianst Chelsea then you could compare them. However what an amazing goal!

For those who were too young to remember the greatest goal ever scored in the history of football, yes! Maradona's goal against England in 1986 in which he told half of England's team "pick up your jockstraps fools!", Messi's goal is very similar. I'd give it a 9/10 in likeness.

Now, just imagine gigantic Estadio Azteca with over 125,000 screaming fans in a tense WC quarterfinal match witnessing how Argentina and Diego bring England to their knees in front of a worldwide TV audience. Greatest goal ever! <Ale> Biggrin

Brilliant, simply beautiful. Maradona comparisons actually do make sense for a change, that was very Maradona like.

For me, and I've been saying this for ages now, Messi is the most talented youngster in the game.

Maradonna's was way better, it was Gefate after all. If he scored it in a CL QF or a WC QF then you could compare them.

When I read the comments on here I expected it to be overhyped. Just seen it, it is a truly sensational goal by the best teenager currently in world football.

Maradona's goal will be special for so many reasons, it is a classic in its own right.

I still can't believe it. What a goal. The true measure of how good a goal is, is the respect of your peers - if you watch the replay from a reverse angle, both Etoo and Deco run towards him with their hands on the side of their head in shock.

I've watched it over and over again, and watched Maradona's too, and it's scary how similar they are! But I have to admit I still rate Maradona's slightly more over this.

Tomorrow will be interesting when the cynics on the board come on and try to blame the defending or find other excuses.

As Messi bore down on the keeper and wondered over which finish to go for, do you think it went through his mind, I'll finish it like Maradona did his by taking it around the keeper and finishing from an angle.

Anyway - the "boy" is a genius. His performances have been intermittent of late - but I hope he can really put him self up there as one of the worlds best next season.

Onwards and upwards - or so to speak. Depor vs Sevilla tonight. Although I feel Depor will get a hammering in the reurn things should be close at the Riazor. The likely line ups -

    Alineaciones
Deportivo: Munúa; Coloccini, Lopo, Andrade, Capdevila; Barragán, De Guzmán, Duscher, Cristian; Juan Rodríguez o Taborda y Arizmendi.

Sevilla: Cobeño; Daniel Alves, Javi Navarro, Escudé, David; Jesús Navas, Poulsen, Maresca, Adriano; Kanouté y Luis Fabiano.

How bad will this Depor team get. Simply disgraceful this evening. I am actually hoping that they are put out of their misery and drop to the segunda next season. At least it might develop a new dawn for the club.

Credit to Sevilla though. They were class first half, and then frustrated Depor in the second. Hopefully Juande will send them out to attack at the Pizjuan, and make it a rout.

I agree ncfc, I cannot see Depor staying up next year if this continues. Their best defenders Capdevila and Andrade will almost certainly leave, the midfield and attack is a bunch of kids who aren't that great and have no experience, and even Caparros is leaving.

Barring the best transfer period in the league, next season could be a rough one for Depor.

As for Messi's final decision on his shot, check out his interviews all over the different Spanish papers' websites. He talks about it there. Barcelona's official website also has an interview with him right after the game as he watches the goal. If i remember correctly, he said that he took the ball at first and ran into the open space he saw, as he always likes to do. Then he wanted to pass to Etoo but saw he had 2 defenders on him, so kept running...when he looked at Etoo again the defenders were moving away so there was a chance of a pass, but he just kept going, and then he couldn't really explain the ending, sounded like he meant he just finished on instinct.
