England being considered for 2010 as FIFA worries over South Africa.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    By Ian McGarry
    May 01, 2007

ENGLAND has emerged as top alternative to host the 2010 World Cup.

FIFA are worried hosts South Africa will not be ready on time as there are major worries over security, stadiums and infrastructure.

England has everything in place already and FIFA chief Sepp Blatter said: “England can host the tournament at short notice, of that I am sure.”

World soccer bosses are considering other nations, with Australia an option.

But SunSport can reveal Blatter has been informed FIFA could lose billions unless they stage the tournament in England if South Africa is not ready.

TV rights and marketing packages have been sold on the basis of games being played around South African time — and there is only one hour difference in UK summer time.

A FA spokesman said: “There have been no discussions with FIFA. However, should they require contingency planning we have some of the finest stadia.”

In the end of the day SA will organise it, I have no doubts on that!

Football's governing body has contingency plans in case South Africa cannot host the World Cup in 2010, Fifa president Sepp Blatter has said.

South Africa's preparations have been dogged by delays and there are fears its stadia will not be ready.

Blatter told BBC One's new Inside Sport programme: "Other countries are ready to organise the World Cup", although he said they would not be needed.

    Interesting!

I have to admit I'm a bit worried about South Africa's ability to host the competition. Finding any country safe in Africa at present seems a bit of an effort. I suppose SA is the best of a bad bunch but there still may be troubles with abductions and general crowd safety

well the cricket world cup is bigger then the preisdents cup considering it lasts 9 weeks, that takes a bit of organization.

anyway SA will end up holding the 2010 WC. bounce

I have concerns as to whether a country rife with such troubles is a suitable venue for the biggest sporting event in the world, will it be prepared for the influx of supporters? Will these supporters be safe?
Muggings, carjackings, part of everyday life in the South African city. Relatively wealthy tourists. You do the maths.

In Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, USA the crime rate is also very high! The could/can also organise a huge tourney. As long as they can guarantee supporters to be safe I cannot see any problems! Many tourists go every year to South Africa so what's the difference?

Yes but the crime is more concentrated, and security provisions are more acceptable, the police force is not corrupt in such an overt manner, the differences are endless.

Also, I can't help but think the money would be better spent elsewhere. On the AIDS that is crippling the population, as the government loooks away in denial, as opposed to our entertainment.

Well, the reputation of the Mexican police precedes them. You are taking one specific issue, you must look at the whole.

It is impossible to conceive of the World cup being held in Colombia, for instance, due to the potential for kidnappings.

In my view, the supporters would have to have private escort to and from the stadium to their hotels in order to prevent tragic incidents. This simply isn't feasible.

The pressure is on SA to make the country safer.... That's why it is also good the FIFA warns SA! If the safety isn't guaranteed over 4 years we always have a back up!

But I think they will sort it out because the lights are on SA now!

Is he licking some bums or what?

Maybe they have similar reports in Italy?
