just out of interest, what would you prefer next season:

    a) finish in 4th
    b) finish mid-table but win the fa cup

    ?

Don't you get a european place for winning the FA Cup anyway? I'm not sure if it's CL or waffa though.

i don't know. for me, i think getting 4th would be awesome for villa because we now have the financial backing, getting in the champions league would be a huge draw for players and could make a big difference long term - which was possibly not the case for everton, who didn't have the backing.

plus getting such a high position in the league would be a very good sign of progression, whereas if we finished midtable again, i'd be a bit disappointed (although winning the fa cup would be very nice compensation)

anyway, Everton were pretty unlucky to draw Villareal in their qualifying game. judging on their performance in the tournament, they were the strongest team in there.

@Luis-So Lille have a better team than Everton/Tottenham?? lol! lol!

Everton have a decent team because they finished 4th. They then brought players like Arteta,Cahill,Valente etc to the club.

No but what I'm saying is...not all of the CL are actually decent. That's why the teams who are in the last 16 are the better ones.

Not only is the CL extra money, but being an EPL club, you could attract decent players who would relish English and Champions League football.

They were just too streetwise. Certainly didn't help having a makeshift back 4 in both games - but at no time (apart from when Alves raped Chimbonda) did I feel we were inferior.

Sevilla were well under par, you missed a real chance to take advantage of that. ok

Man for man Lille don't look as good but they are much more intelligent than Everton or Spurs.

Berbatov would obviously walk into their team but Spurs/Everton don't have anyone in midfield that could really create something out of nothing at the top level like Bodmer and Keita can:

Arteta is a damn good player. I've seen him create some great goals this season. Manuel Fernandes is also a fantastic player

True, but Fernandes proved himself last season for Benfica - played all the way up to and including the quarters.

Arteta has also played for Rangers in the CL, when he was a lot younger and he did pretty well.

I think this Everton squad has a lot more depth and quality than the one that made it two seasons ago, with a few acquisitions in the summer, they could have done quite well if they'd qualified
