    He could play anywhere across the defence , he eventually became a center-back/sweeper.

    He was the symbol of the Ajax Total Football philosphy.

    For sure he has been one of the best , opponents / pundits alike would say.

    Carlos for me, although Maldini was better defensively, in his prime Roberto Carlos carried more attacking threat than many top-level left wingers, something that Maldini never really had.

    I voted for Maldini. Nevber really rated Carlos defensively, which ought to be the primary job of a left-back. Remember Krol. Great player. Packed a hell of a shot on him if I remember as well. Breitner and Brehme were okay, but never close to best ever. Can't comment on Santos or Fachetti as I never saw them.
