Post by Batman Sun May 20, 2007 4:34 pm

A late goal from Shota Arveladze handed AZ Alkmaar a 2-1 win over Ajax in their UEFA Champions League play-off.

The two sides are battling for the right to join PSV Eindhoven at Europe's top table and met in the first leg on Sunday.

AZ took an early lead when Simon Cziommer lobbed Maarten Stekelenburg.

Holland international Wesley Sneijder netted a fine solo effort on 13 minutes to level the scores, but Arveladze (pictured) netted from close range in the last minute to hand AZ the advantage.

An early goal from Anduele Prijor and header from Danko Lazovic on 78 minutes handed Vitesse Arnhem a 2-0 win at NEC Nijmegen and put them in pole position to claim a spot in the Intertoto Cup

Early goals from Luis Suarez and Yevgeny Levchenko handed Groningen a cushion over Utrecht and a late penalty from Gregoor van Dijk was not enough to deny the home side a spot in the Uefa Cup.

Utrecht will now face Vitesse for a spot in the Uefa Cup.

RBC Roosendaal and Excelsior played out a 1-1 draw in their promotion/relegation play-off, while VVV Venlo ran out 2-0 winners over RKC Waalwijk.

Huntelaar i doubt will leave if Ajax do make the Champions League 3rd Round qualifiers .. then if he does (want to go) he must think.

    If they don't , we see who's intrested ..

Sneijder on the other hand would be a fool to leave if Ajax do beat AZ next week ... if they don't, understandable .. but where can the club go , forward maybe not.

It makes no sense , Huntelaar has been saying he wants European Football next season .. shame if he does go, absolute shame.

btw, Henk Ten Cate wants him to stay.

£12m surely wont be enough to secure a striker who has scored so many goals over the past 2 seasons. I mean Nani was being touted for £20m, so surely the hunter will be valued at that level?!

Well that is 18 Million Euros, that is fair enough I think. Ajax will sell him for 20-25 Million Euros for sure, so United has to offer a few millions more then.

Huntelaar should not leave in Ajax makes the European Cup qualifiers , if they dont .. its up to him , if he does a Bergkamp and does not make it in his first few years .. its not over just dont make the wrong choice

however if he does a van Basten and does go to the right club , he will have the last laugh

interesting that Cruijff wants him at Barcelona when he does decide to leave ... and van Basten has warned him not to leave ..

I think when you consider, how much players cost for English clubs these days, £12-15m would be a very good price for a player with such a prolific goal scoring record.

What was the hunter like yesterday, as Fergie watched him. I heard he got subbed off after 60 minutes, did he have a stinker or was he injured?

I have only watched him play about 5 times and he has impressed me, but a few people on here really dont rate him at all (although no one here seems to rate anyone anymore), he isnt another Kezman is he?

Huntelaar this season has not lived up to the standards his set last year .. despite that he has performed well in the 2nd half of the season (1st not so good)

I worry that if he moves now , he many not make it and then would be considered a flop even though he has potential.

Its a shame today sides like Ajax cant hold onto their good players , and this only means they will never be as good as van Gaals side of the 90's.

If i was him , i will listen to Marco van Basten and honour his contract at Ajax .. it will be good for him and the club.

some players move on too quickly and then disappear into oblivion. I also think the Dutch league makes players look better than they really are (like the mentioned Kezman) and they overestimate their own potential. They then end up at a club that's too big for them and they sit their contract out on the bench until a smaller club rescues them.

Van Basten played in the Dutch league several years and was already a very established player before he moved on. Huntelaar is not there yet although it is perhaps difficult to assume he would ever be quite at that standard anyway.

Huntelaar is decent striker, young version of RVN! Better version of Villa if you like. Ajax want to get rid of him anyway, he just doesn’t suits in a 4-3-3 system. And that system is holy for the yids.

4-3-3 or 4-2-4 ; the system can look on paper different to how its operated on the field.
