Euro 2008 Seedings Fiasco Empty Euro 2008 Seedings Fiasco

    Post by Ä Fri Jun 08, 2007 7:06 pm

    in a nutshell

    there are four groups

Switzerland , Austria (the hosts) and Greece (the holders) will head one group each, leaving one spot (not Germany after a poor 2004)

the second seeds will be determined based on Euro qualifying results (Germany will be safe after our sensational run)

teams in contention: France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Portugal, Spain...

    add England, the Czechs...

you can quickly understand that next year there could be even TWO GROUPS OF DEATH

    Shocked

to be honest, there could easily be one or two VERY EASY groups

imagine Greece or Austria heading a group each

Holland and Croatia could join them respecively

    followed by Russia and Denmark

    + who cares

the big boys could all crowd TWO groups

that would be great imo. the big teams play Cr@p football(not germany of course) anyway no matter who they meet so they might aswell do it on a high level. im not sure that all the top teams can get in the same group though.

Make that Germany instead of Holland and you´re right on all accounts.

The Swiss and Austrians shouldn't be top seeds just because they are hosts. Makes the seedings a complete shambles.

This report seems wrong to me.
Here is the official regulation from the UEFA-site:
    http://www.uefa.com/newsfiles/19079.pdf
    Article 7.04:
    Coefficients
The seeded teams will be the host associations, with the reigning European champions if they qualify, and one or two teams with the best coefficents on the basis on results achieved in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying competition and/or in the qualifying competition for the 2006/08 UEFA European Football Championship. The other finalists will be assigned to the four groups by means of a draw, according to their coefficents.

So the coefficients are based solely on qualification results and not the last Euros (btw, that's how the UEFA-coefficents have always been calculated, and that's why Sweden were seeded in 2004)

Currently, I think Germany would have the best coefficent (2,714), as only the results of this qualification are used for them.
Anyway, there is no chance for two groups of death, as Austria are $h!t, and Switzerland and Greece are decent, but not worldbeaters, so only the group with the best coefficent are likely to become a group of dead.

What is more displeasing, is the fact that a "superbowl"-format is used like in the 2002 World Cup, which means that in the final one team of group A or B must play one team of group C or D, whereas in the 2006 World Cup any two teams could meet in the final.

As for the Oranje, bring it on! Twisted Evil Razz Devil

We're always in the group of death as we're always the strongest unseeded team. No matter what the tournie, WC or EC. Nothing unfamiliar for us, and nothing to fear.

I bothered to calculate the coefficients with the standing as of nowfor the teams likely to qualify fot the tournament. I decided to include Portugal, Turkey, England and the Netherlands, even though they are currently not under the top two placs in their groups. Play-off games for the WC 2006 are not considered (affecting Spain, Turkey and the Czech Republic).

team points ECQ games ECQ coefficient points WCQ games WCQ coefficient total coefficient
    Poland 19 9 2,111111111 24 10 2,4 2,255555556

    Ranking
    1. Greece (def. Champions) 2,161

    9. Poland 2,256
    10. Portugal* 2,25

    11. England* 2,25
    12. Czech Republic 2,125
    13. Spain 2,071
    14. Turkey 2,042

    * places decided by average number of goals scored in ECQ

As can be seen, Germany are rather sure to be seeded; the Netherlands, Sweden and Croatia are quite sure to be in pot 2, the rest is still to close to call, with Spain and the Czech Republic likely to be in pot 4.

    So thgis group is possible:
    Germany
    Netherlands
    France

That was the group of death!

Although I remember you being very lucky vs. Czech Republic as you only won through a last minute (debatable) De Boer penalty. France fielded a weakened XI against you guys as well.

The real football came with the match vs. Yugoslavia. <Ale>

This would be the group of death to rival all before (in which we were likely in anyhow).

I might as well choose this group as everything we will achieve (not much) will be in spite of Van Basten. Might as well go out with a bang if we do.

BTW Good work Lionman. ok Ale

    Like last time

    Holland/Czech/Germany
    Italy/Denmark/Sweden

In each case one of them had to go.

That wasn't exactly a great group to be in...

Still I haven't seen anything as difficult as the group we had in WC02

    England/Argentina/Sweden/Nigeria.
