Looks like Eveton have now purchased 50% of Fernandes contract.

Last I heard such a deal would be worth 9M Euros, so his total worth is obviously estimated at 18M Euros.

Don't know how long the contract terms are to be. He seems to like it at Everton or he wouldn't be so quick to be going back.

Man City would've been a good destination IMO, they just seem to have more overall potential in comparison to Everton.

I think he's left a good impression in England but I guess not enough for a larger club to take a risk on bringing him in. Personally, Fernandes is a player I rate.

Everton is still a good destination - Everton have a very good three tiered midfield if they get him with Cahill and Arteta - 3 top class players that each offer something different.

So who owns the other 50% of his contract? private owners?

Everton are building a really good squad here

Yea, I believe the other 50% is owned by private owners. I could be wrong about this, Benfica isn't exactly my strong point knowledge wise.

That's one of the reasons Benfica didn't want to sell though, they know they wouldn't get the full transfer fee and were asking something like 20M Euros because of that.

He seemed to enjoy his time at Everton last season - was a bit of a big fish in a small pond and the fans seemed to really warm to him.

He probably views them as a stepping stone for two seasons or so before a really big move to one of the top European clubs - I know Everton aren't really your classic stepping stone in that they're actually a smaller club than Benfica but proving himself in the EPL might make the Milan's and Madrid's of this world take notice

I agree on the stepping stone bit, however I don't think his final goal is to reach Milan or Madrid, but rather the Arsenals/Liverpools/Manchesters of the EPL.

He's said various times his ideal league is the EPL. I think a chance to play for one of the top English clubs would be the move he really wants. Playing well for Everton may convice one of the title contenders that he's worth spending money one.

Liverpool seem more than set in this position, Arsenal have Cesc, Manchester just bought Hargreaves and Chelsea have .... room for Fernandes?

Makelelé isn't getting any younger, but they have other players for the centre of the park so I don't know if this could even be considered in the near future.

TBH although id love to see us sign Fernandes i dont think a DM is Sven's priority at the moment, especially with Hamann playing a blinder on saturday, plus we have two very good youngsters in Fernandes and Johnson. I think Sven might keep with those players for another season (i expect Hamann to retire or be sold next summer) and then we will bring in a DM.

    You never know...

If we were to sell Cesc in two years for instance I suspect we'd be very interested

    The Sunday Times:

All Portugal's disappointed players walked past reporters after Wednesday's 2-1 defeat by Holland in the European Under-21 Championship here - all except Nani, that is, who was escorted secretly on to the team bus to save him facing the media. Then again, what could he have said? Manchester United's new £17 million whizz-kid was all but anonymous as he failed to make any lasting impression at the Euroborg Stadium.

It was left to childhood friends, such as Manuel Fernandes, recently of Everton, and Miguel Veloso, who grew up with both Nani and Cristiano Ronaldo at Sporting Lisbon, to provide a perspective on the young man of whom so much is expected.

What's a pleasant suprise is that he adapted to the EPL very quickly esp to the pace and physical aspect. He adds a bit of steel to Evertons MF, allowing the likes of Arteta and Cahill (Inj) more creative freedom.

Aye. And they have Jagielka to slot in against the sterner tests - they can play a diamond:

    ----------Jagielka
    ----Arteta-------Fernandes
    -----------Cahill

And to that they can always add in Carsley or Osman as back ups

BBC say the deal is going to be sealed in the next 24 hours and that they paid Benfica just £6m for 50%. Brilliant deal for him.

Is anyone else getting a feeling that it might be Everton that challenge the top 4 this season?

    So MSI still own 50%?

IMO Everton & City will be the strongest challengers for the top four. I'm still not entirely convinced by Johnson et all up front for Everton tho.

No. Not good enough at either end of the pitch, don't have the squad to cover for injuries. I rate City and Newcastle higher than them at the moment...

The back 5 of Howard, Yobo, Lescott, Baines and Neville I personally think is very decent.

Up front they perhaps aren't as good as some other teams but Johnson, despite being technically poor will always get you quite a few goals, as well Yakubu.

Sure, but look at their backup in this area - a long drop off after the first choice players.

Johnson largely scores tap ins and penalties. He's an astonishingly limited forward. Would you have him at Arsenal? Of course you wouldn't, because he can't control a ball, pass, dribble, head...
